Ear Mites I just got back from the vet with our new 11 week (on Monday) yorkie! He has a really bad case of ear mites. Does anybody know how dogs get ear mites? Does that mean his breeder wasn't such a good breeder? Can I still trust all the other advice she gave me? I didn't do much research BEFORE buying my puppy (wish I had). Now we have him and love him! |
I'm gonna guess yes because a puppy that comes to you from a breeder shouldn't have ear mites. What other advice did you get from the breeder? did you meet the parents? Did you see the place where they were raised? Welcome to yt and at least ear mites are an easy fix. :) Glad you already are in love...it's hard not to be they easily steal your heart in a second. |

I didn't get much "advice" - mostly about hypoglycemia and feeding. I was also referring to parents and sizing. I saw the mother but not the father. She said the father was her dads and that is where he was. My appointment was last minute so she said she didn't have time to get him. I did see where they were raised - in her home. It seemed clean. She said he would be around 6 pounds when full grown. He is now 2 pounds 12 oz. There are a few things that made me question her (now, after the fact) like she didn't ask ANYTHING about me or the home I was taking him to, she also had a littler of mini poodles and now the ear mites. |
Most of the advice was about feeding/hypoglycemia/bathing. I was also referring to sizing. She said he should be 6 pounds full grown. He is 2 lb 12oz right now. Accurate? I wasn't hoping for a tiny baby, but within the 5-7 range. I saw the mother, but not the father. Since my visit was last minute she said she didn't have time to get the father from her dad. I did see where they were raised - in her house and it seemed pretty clean. A few things that I have realized now (after the fact) made me question her. She didn't ask me ANYTHING about me or the home I could provide, she also had a litter of min. Poodles and now the mites. Those are just off the top of my head. I am concerned this means my little Snickers won't have a healthy life! Although, the vet said other than ear mites he looked good. |
Revolution heartworm preventative also kills ear mites. If you have any other dogs/cats, ear mites transmit easily around to everyone! I dont know what kind of heartworm medicine you are using, but if you start pup on Revolution, it will take care of the ear mites as well. |
