GREAT point on activity/exercise! Now I'm surprised that it wasn't included, most especially bc we're hearing so much about an almost epidemic of overweight dogs (just like is happening in humans). Dogs need/want stimulation, fun, and activity. |
Gracie so absolutely correct. |
There's nothing my boys love more than wrestling and playing with other dogs and a really good walk. Our winter was terrible but grateful we have lots of dog neighbours that were out tearing around in the snow and coming over to hang out. |
While I agree with this article in part it does send a message that certain drugs are not important and completely toxic. My dog is on four meds to manage pain. Giving a heartworm pill monthly does not even enter into my field of concern. I think the fear of these drugs given only once a month can be excessive. I'd be waaaaaaay more concerned if my dog came up positive and we were faced with needing to treat. The articke sways people to avoid med use. Nothing wrong with fresh food for pups. But to buy all fresh, local, 'safe' and 'healthy' ingredients, well...it just is not going to happen in most cases because of the massive expense. While I am sure some dog food company somewhere uses the best ingredients and turns out fresh products (this is my disclaimer), I have not ran across one that makes these claims that truly delivers as promised. Dig deep and you will find expert marketers. |

This statement is pretty broad. Highly processed food has its place. |

I love my dogs but their home cooked meals are not composed of pastured animals. They also have carbohydrate-inclusive diets that are usually sweet potatoes, canned or frozen organic corn or peas, and sometimes organic pasta. These dreaded carbs are costly! The cost of home cooked food for my 7-lb dog would be over $1,000 a year if I used all pastured animals and organic carbs. It isn't necessary. And yes, I do sometimes "subject them" to processed foods for convenience. I too resent the implication that somehow we aren't taking good care of our dogs because we don't throw a premade raw patty in the dog bowl. |
I can't speak for all areas of the country but if you do some searching in your region there are usually a lot of small privately owned farms that specialize in organic fruits and veggies as well as those who raise grass fed animals for food. It is true that if you buy that kind of product in your local grocery store the prices are astounding! But if you learn to how to find the other market that is off the main grocery store route you can buy very good quality organic fruits and veggies as well as fresh natural meats. There are an abundance of websites that cater to informing the consumer about how to find local farms and markets that sell these foods. |

Have there yet been any studies that show either people or animals life longer or have less disease directly due to eating organic foods and not just because the person is generally living a healthier life or providing a healthier overall life for their dog? |

I should mention that if I am going to buy farm pastured animals, I want them salughtered at an all organic USDA facility. That means animals in my state are transported out of state for processing. This excludes chicken, my farmer processes on site. So that's why it's expensive. Not feeding that to dogs. |
