This has been going on for awhile. He had Giardia for awhile, but has tested negative, so I don't know what to think, but this doesn't look normal. He acts full of pep and energy and eats like a demon. Anybody have any idea of what it could be?:confused:

That doesn't sound normal. Any diet changes that preceded this poop problem?

My friend's pup has battled giardia and she told me that it doesn't always show up in testing. When was Milo tested last?

It could also be a sign of intestinal blockage or narrowing. Please take a poop sample into the vet so they can take a look at it. Another Yorkietalk member's dog recently had surgery to widen the large intestine.

Yes...I do have an idea of what it can be...giardia attacks the small intestine, where very important flora are supposed to live. Giardia leaves behind a mess, most especially if it occurs in a puppy - then, digestion can actually be a mess for many months and that's no exaggeration. I would put your kiddo on a probiotic ASAP to repopulate and support the small intestine...this is one I like: DOGZYMES® Probiotic Max – 8 Ounces » Natures Farmacy Inc.

No diet changes, not really. Only when I first brought him home and I switched him a few weeks later from what breeder was feeding to Halshans raw, which he loves. It's a human grade premium dog food and Cassie does great on it. I do sprinkle a little Stewarts liver treats and a little parmesan cheese on for flavor, but this kind of poop has been going on for awhile, ever since the Giardia, which was when I first got him. I got him tested last week, and it came back negative.
Will test again at end of next week. I guess I thought that once the Giardia was gone, then the poop would go back to normal. But still the same:eek:

Well this has me concerned, but my vet never said anything about possible intestinal blockage. Are there any other signs? I guess I never asked about that, I just brought in the poop to be tested, and I assumed it looked the way it did because of the Giardia, so I never mentioned the way it looked. I just figured it would go away after the Giardia was gone. Will have to follow up.

Well this is very distressing. Thanks for the tip. He was sold to me WITH the Giardia. She did tell me to get him tested when I got him, that she had gotten a call from another lady who purchased a puppy from her recently, and that that puppy had Giardia. Had him tested and we've been battling it ever since. I took him home 1/29/14. He was 14 weeks. Will be 6 months in another 3 weeks. I do have an appointment to neuter 4/16, now wondering if I should cancel. He's been on two rounds of Panacure and now is on the first week of an enzyme treatment that is supposed to eat any Giardia left in the system. If he was negative after the first round this week, I was not going to repeat it, as he was already negative when I started this regime. The protocol is to do one week of treatment, one of rest and then another week of treatment. We just finished the first week. Anyway will talk to Vet about the Probiotic Dogzymes Probiotic Max. Thanks a lot Ann. I can't wait to get rid of this thing!!!!

Other signs would be blood in the poop. If the blockage is partial, there might not be any vomiting or other signs of discomfort. This is what happened to Matese's Cody recently. The poop was stringy and came out like earthworms. Don't worry, the vet will be able to rule this out after checking out the sample you brought in. Hopefully it's something minor that can be easily treated.

Long stringy poopie sometimes are perfectly normal when they eat raw food...Momo got that sometimes (he's on 100% raw). I add digestive enzymes & probiotics to every meal & his poopies are always tiny, firm & consistent. It really helps digest everything & break down the nutrients for easy absorption. The one Wiley's Mom linked is excellent & I'm using NWC Naturals, love it so much, decided to become a retailer.

Sometimes they can get long stringy poo if there's an obstruction (like stones) or even full anal glands. Even inflammation of the digestive tract(s) can cause skinny pencil poopies. So if it continues, maybe having the vet check Milo out would be a good idea.

Well I might have spoken too soon, I hope. Milo had one of his first normal poops in a long time. Since there is no discomfort, blood, vomiting, etc, and since he is on raw (Halshans-Frozen) I think it might be what Ann says, the Giardia, and now that he was negative, I'm hoping this nightmare will clear up. Today i gave him a teaspoon of nonfat greek yogurt, I think that is supposed to be good for them. Although his meals are all raw (Halshans raw frozen and Stella and Chewy's for treats (freeze dried raw) I do give him low fat string cheese sometimes as a treat and steak, chicken and fish (cooked) as special treats for potty training. He also gets some apple (no skin) and a little banana.
I'm interested in looking into your product that you are carrying Jenny. I will discuss with my Vet. It sounds like something good to give. If the stringy poops don't go away I will definitely go to Vet to check out possible obstruction.
I don't think he has worms. Anyway will update soon.

Yay!!! It sounds like it's just due to the raw feeding. I hope that Milo's potty habits continue to improve!

I always keep the following items in my doggy pantry just because you never know what the wee boogers may nibble on during a walk when you aren't looking for a second.
Probiotic, a really good one
Digestive enzyme
Slipper elm bark powder Slippery Elm for Better Pet Digestion

these are all great to have for upset tums

Diatomaceous earth - great natural dewormer and killer of fleas

Hi all,
Thought I'd do an update for Milo. His poopies are getting better, so I am hopeful he will test negative this Tues for Giardia. My Vet has given me a potion (that's what I call them, cause she's magical (LOL) containing probiotics/digestive enzymes, but not sure if it contains slippery elm bark. He seems to be getting better, poopies firmer and wider so far. Thanks to everyone for the info, Ann, Teegy, pstinard, Jenny, Kristin--thank you all for all of your valuable information from:
