Retained teeth, Neutering, Age? OH MY! Our pup is 3.5 months old (3lbs), and I am starting to get antsy over the neutering, and retained teeth talk that I hear/read! I've been told to wait until he is around 5 months (from our vet) to have him neutered, to me that seems not only a bit young, but still too small. Again, I heard with toy/small dogs with all of their "parts" being small, it is better to wait until they are a bit bigger. I have seen others waiting until they are 7 months and that puts my mind at ease. Now, onto the second part of my question...the retained puppy teeth...how do I know if any are retained, other than seeing adult teeth behind/in front of the puppy teeth? I grew up with BIG dogs and they just seemed to swallow their puppy teeth, on occasion we would find one, but not often. I have not noticed any changes to his teeth as of yet!! I know I will probably get numerous pieces of advice, and that is great...I love reading everyone's ideas, opinions and thoughts...and then making my decision from there! Thanks all!;) |
I would wait until at least 6 months to neuter. The vet should know which teeth are baby teeth and which ones to pull. If you get the pre surgery blood work everything should be ok. Most people like to get there boys done early before they start marking. |
I would wait until a lot more than the recommended norms. At the very earliest 10 months, with 12-14 months being ideal in my eyes. This will allow your pups growth plate to close, and allow all baby teeth to fall out on their own. If for some reason they don't fall out, they can be extracted at the same time as the neuter. My 2 cents anyway. |
A link to a thread about spaying/neutering. This is a widely debated topic. Which is the timing of spay/neuter, and even if you should do it at all! Also there are options to the full de-sexing of a dog, that leaves intact the hormones. Such as vasectomies, and tubal ligation. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...if-ever-2.html In terms of baby teeth, sometimes you will just see an absence of a tooth in the mouth, or sometimes you can see the adult teeth growing in. 5 months old is way too young to be spayed in my opinion unless there is an overweening medical reason for it ... such as an undescended testicle. |
I got mine spay and neuter at 6 months and they are 8 yrs old and it didnt affect them at all. Their legs arent too long or too short. They have never had LP or any problems in the leg or skeletal. I didnt want to wait because I didnt want the marking to start or you have to work on breaking a bad habit. My vet took the retained teeth out at that time |
I think 7 months is fine, but anywhere between 6 and 10 months should be okay. The longer you wait, the more likely the dog will mark territory. The vet will know which teeth need to be removed. |
