Pancreatitis
 

My 12 year old baby girl just got diagnosed after a year of bouts with digestive and urinary issues and ensuing vet visits and tests. Her urinary issues are exhibited by high protein levels though we need to get to the bottom of that too.

She is very finicky and was used to eating cooked chicken and vegetables, royal canin for yorkies and treats from the boulder dog food company - all too high in fat I am afraid.

Does anyone have a good diet to recommend - dry food or cooking? Thanks so much!

What are the urinary symptoms?

Royal Canin Low Fat prescription food is the lowest fat available. If feeding dog food that is what I'd go with. You could homecook under the direction if a veterinary nutritionist.

I'm so sorry about your girl. My dog has been on a home cooked diet through Rebecca Remillard, a board certified vet nutritionist (her website is PetDiets - VNC putting your pet's health first .. for more than 20 yrs!). She recommended a low fat diet for Barney and she used chicken in his diet. He also ats the RC gastrointestinal lowfat kibble also which as Crystal said is the lowest commercial food on the market. Thankfully he has not had pancreatitis again for four years, but he had twice and it's tough.

Throughout her life she has had intermittent bouts of diarrhea and vomit and even more frequent urinary issues. Over a year ago her father and companion died suddenly and tragically (botched liver shunt surgery).

For my surviving dog, after this, symptoms worsened. Then after treating with Clamavox, she was fine for six months and recently worse spend again. She'd been through batteries of tests before and again now. This is the first time a doctor indicated positive for pancreatitis and I'm going to ask for details tomorrow about how acute/severe it is. The fact that she also has these chronic yet intermittent urinary issues makes me wonder if we got it right.

Symptoms have typically included frequent or too infrequent ruination, frequent drinking, seeming discomfort or difficulty urinating, blood at times. Her tests shoe increased protein levels this time, while other times I recall high white blood cell counts. I need the facts still as this is all fresh. I'm concerned about Kidney disease as a possibility. In case you are wondering she's had sonograms before which show not much and no stones. She does have high alkaline phosphatase levels.

If any if this rings any bells, I'd appreciate any insight.

Zoey has had P twice and she is on RC Gastrointestional Low Fat canned food and she loves it. In the afternoon she get their kibble. No problems so far. Good luck with helping your little one stay P free.

Fat content is 1% in the canned food.

The dry food is 5 or 6% fat.

I got her RC gastro low fat. Thank you all. I'm also going to look into the nutritionist in NYC.

Let us know how she like the new food. Zoey didn't like it at first but after a couple of days she took to it. We always have a clean bowl.
