....HELP.....Ugh...ITCHING!!!!!!!!!!ugh.... [F]Vinny my 4.5 year old Yorkie, a couple times each year gets ITCHY skin. I have taken him to the vet so many times for ITCHY skin! With really no relief an allergy pill until whatever it is or was passes. The Vet has checked his skin for bacteria and fungus nothing showed up. Vinny does have little dry flakes so the Vet started fish oil. I used it routinely, it did not help at all. Vinny loved it, he became a bit chunky tho, lol. We have tried special doggie shampoos and conditioners, nothing helps. Even tho the Vet did not believe it was his food I changed what he was eating Iams Small Dog. (He does not chew his feet) only ITCHES at his left and right sides, neck ect. I did change his dog food to Blue Wilderness. (No grains I think it helped a bit.) But he still ITCHED to the point of loosing a lot of his hair. And his hair became so greasy. AND HE STILL ITCHED LIKE CRAZY!!!!! So I switched his food to Royal Canine for Yorkshire Terriers. His hair is nicer and shiner but he still ITCHES!!!!! AAHHH!!!!these poor loved ones. It is a shame there is not a salve like product with natural healthy ingredients that could be rub on these areas to help soothe,:aimeeyork instead of more medications.Vinny my 4.5 year old Yorkie, a couple times a year gets itchy skin also. I have taken home to the vet so many times. We have checked for bacteria, fungus, he does have little dry flakes so we started fish oil also. Used it routinely, it did not help either. I did change his dog food to Blue Wilderness. But he still itched to the point of loosing a lot of his hair. And his hair became so greasy. Please send any advice, I would:love:to hear from you!!!! Sounds like environmental allergens. Try using coconut oil topically, you can also put some in the food. How much fish oil are they getting? Try cutting back and see if the coats improve (become less greasy) Are they on any Heartworm treatment? |
Vet gave me Prednisone..3 days 1 pill, then 1 every day. As well bath every two days with vet shampoo to help the skin heal. Here in Florida allergies are wild..trees are in full bloom |
There is a new allergy medication now that you might want to ask your vet about: Apoquel I have some for one of my allergy pups. I have not started it yet but plan to in the near future. |
:yorkieg: Hi Ladyjane: Thanks for your reply. I will take Vinny to the vet tomorrow. Poor guy needs some relief. Good advice! Thanks again. :yorkiej: |

Hi Kjc, thanks for your reply. Coconut oil is a good idea! Oh I stopped using the fish oil. The oil was not helping and Royal Canine has fish oil in it. Both my Yorkies are on Revolution. :flag42::rose40:Sienna::longyorkie:Babydoll:yorkie j:Vinny :rbyorkie:Amber :rbyorkie:Ashley :rbyorkie:Emily :rbyorkie:Sisi |
You're welcome! Hopefully it may give him some relief while you are in search of a more permanent solution... |
When you say you gave an "allergy pill" - what did you try? It sounds like your kiddo has seasonal allergies - for that, you'd want to try OTC antihistamines, Temaril-P, steroids, or possibly Apoquel. Read more here: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...tart-here.html |

dog I totally understand the anguish when you have an itchy dog. I had a poodle with awful itchy skin. Spent money to take Chips to the derm doc. He said put her on a venison base dog food. For her, it really helped. I used hypo allergenic shampoo. I have a friend who's cocker spaniel is allergic to grass. I would change the food to venison and if that doesn't work allergy testing is next. Of course pray for this to be healed. it is awful to see them itch. |
Relief from scratching My first yorkie had severe scratching issues, I assume from allergies, and I was told he might be allergic to even just one flea bite. It was constant. I did not want to bring him in for the steroid shots as they are suppose to be bad for esp. small dogs. I found a topical steroid spray call Genesis, ask your vet, I bought a big bottle, you just spray it once on the "hot spot". It is the only thing I found that worked. Wish I could give you this bottle. I now have a new pup that is a bit bigger, stronger , huskier - and never has scratching! I know the frustration for both of you. This topical is a life saver. Also, remember just a single flea bite can irritate for days. I used to use the tiny comb daily along w flea meds. Good luck! |
chester has enviromential allergies and I use fish oil, no fabric softner ,a extra rinse on anything he is in contact with, no plug in air freshners, vinegar and water to clean my laminate floors, and he gets temaril p when its really bad anithistamine and presnisone, and use a air cleaner, wipe him down good after he has been outsde especially if it is still damp out. good luck |
Hello, thank you for replying. Vinny and I did go to the Vet last week. The Vet did the usual check up the Vet did not seem to be to worried. Since Vinny does not get this itching to much 1 to 2 times per year. But when he does it is sad to see the little guy scratching. Then noting his bits of hair throughout the house. This was the first time I have gone to the Vet, that I mentioned I heard of Apoquol and Genesis spray from posting a question at YorkieTalk. And that I sought the very informative advice and answers from you wonderful and kind people at YorkieTalk. I was able to ask her about the Apoquel(on back order), the Genesis spray(Vet does not carry) she then began talking about everything they did have. Like shampoos, cortisone shot, some kind of tube of oil ect. Then she remembered there was a new Derm. Shampoo out called Douxo. It helps with the ph of the skin. Douxo sounded like a winner. As soon as we came home, I bathed Vinny. I have only seen him itch once since. So far the Douxo is working great. It is nice not to have to give him something by mouth. Thanks Again :flag42::rose40:Sienna :longyorkie:Babydoll :yorkiej:Vinny :animal-pa: :rbyorkie:Amber :rbyorkie:Ashley:rbyorkie:Emily :rbyorkie:Sisi |
Thank you for the information. I have one of my babies that literally chews her feet. Every vet says it is probably environmental but we have not been able to stop the chewing. I had her on prescribed dog food thinking it may be an allergic reaction to something in her food, now her weight has gotten out of control. I just purchased the shampoo, I am keeping my fingers crossed. I know how horrible it is when I have an itch so I can't imagine what she feels like. |
