Red/inflamed hind legs My four year old yorkie Hannah has had allergy problems her whole life. We tried different foods but it doesn't seem to be a food based allergy. Eventually the vet put her on temiril which made her stop scratching and biting at herself. She had done fairly well with the temiril which we gave to her as little as possible because of the concern for long term damage. When I took her in for her checkup in January her hind legs were all red and she had an infection. I was given anti-biotics and it cleared up the infection, but her legs were still red. When I brought her back for her follow-up we saw a different vet and she took her off the temiril and put her on apoquel. She seems to be doing okay on apoquel but her legs are still red. The vet said that they were inflamed and hopefully it will go away. We don't see her going at her legs anymore but she is left alone for hours at a time and that might be when she is biting herself. Sorry for the long intro - my question is if anybody has dealt with red and inflamed legs with their yorkies and if they have any possible solutions. Thanks! |
It may take a while for her legs to feel and look less irritated...she probably damaged some of the surface skin and this will take some time to shed and renew. In the meantime, get some hydrocortisone cream and rub it on her legs - rub it in good so that she can't lick it up. Vets sometimes prescribe things for irritated skin so you may want to ask if there is something stronger you could use. Muciprocin (sp?) is sometimes given. |
Thanks for the info. I will have to look into hydrocortisone. I have been to the vet three times already this year and switched from temiril to the more expensive apoquel so my vet budget is kind of blown. Trying to get some ideas without bringing her back yet again. Thanks! |

I have a pup on Temeril P and he has been on it for many years (at least 6 years). The allergy injections did not work for him. My vet prefers it be given every other day so I do that except when he has more issues and then I give it daily. He has never had issues taking it. It really is not that much prednisone and while I agree that it is not the best choice all of the time, for some it is. I recently tried to taper him off and he had issues with his collapsed trachea so he is back on it daily. He is a senior pup and all of his lab values are good. I was going to try the Apoquel but I am not certain on that . My vet said I could do both, the Temeril P and the Apoquel. Just don't know how I feel about that. I wanted to use it instead of the Temeril P but clearly that will not work because of the CT. Maybe best to leave as is...and treat him with injections a couple of times a year when he gets a bit more itchy. Hope this helps you regarding the use of Temeril P. |
