Teeth Pulling When Spayed What is the general thought about pulling the baby teeth when you have them spayed ? I was going to wait until June for Bailee to be spayed and the trainer at Puppy Class said it was not a good idea as Bailee will be 8 months She is 5 months now and has not lost any teeth , that I can see. I do not want her to go into her first heat , not sure about pulling teeth? How do they eat with no teeth? I have never dealt with this with larger breeds. |
Cedric had a few removed while under for his neuter imo it's best to do both so you do not have to put them under again for teeth removal. They start to get uncomfortable with the extra teeth when the baby teeth pop up so I would check with your vet and if Bailee is a good weight they may due it at six months. Im sure others will chime in with their feelings also. :) |

About the age to spay, it's best to wait until after the growth plates in the legs have closed. That normally happens by 8 months, but the vet can tell by an x-ray. Small breed dogs like Yorkies *usually* don't go into heat before then, but it *could* happen. We had Bella spayed at 7 months as a compromise. |
WHY did the trainer say this was not a good idea? It is very common procedure on all small dogs, to have teeth pulled during spay/neuter.....if the pup is done at 8 months old. Spaying at that age of course allows growth plates to mature and pulling baby teeth at that age gets them all done as pup will not be getting more teeth in at that age....some organizations want to and will spay/meuter at 4 months old and even much earlier...wont go into all the issues related to doing that but will say pulling baby teeth at that early age may not get all the extra teeth because all the adult teeth are not even in yet, so you dont know that those baby teeth wont fall out on their own. You really dont want to put these small dogs under anesthesia numerous unnecessary times.....you also dont want to put them under for extended period of time....a good vet and great vet tech can get in there and get teeth done and surgery done quickly and all will be over with. |
I wouldn't get her spayed before 6 months for sure but I would wait until 8 months. By then most of the baby teeth that are going to fallout will have. |
I would def get baby teeth pulled when getting spayed bc otherwise, you're going to have to put her under again for a whole other procedure. Better to get it all done at once...better cost wise too, btw. |
Abby and Ziva were spayed at 7 months, Ziva getting 7 teeth pulled ,Abby just the top two canines.Ziva was actually a lot happier without the double set of teeth,by the next day you couldn't even see were the baby teeth had been! |
When I got my Leo fixed he was about 7 months old. The vet pulled 3 of his baby teeth out while he was under (they hadn't fallen out yet and his adult teeth had already grown in) and I'm soooo glad she did. I thought he may have trouble eating after due to soreness, but he ate just fine and didn't seem to notice. My advice- do it!!! You're saving you and your baby time, money and extra "ouchies" for the future... Good luck! |
Thanks for all the feedback!! So far no baby teeth out or new in (that I can see) and I talked to our vet and she said 7 months was a good time. I understand that normally these little furballs going into their heat later than larger dogs, so May 19th it is! Hopefully by then her adult teeth will have come in, and we can pull the remaining baby ones!! |
Spay/Teeth Pulled Pippin's vet saw that she still had a few baby teeth at 6.5 mos when she went in for a loose knee problem. She was to be spayed the next month and he suggested to take them out then. She was spayed last week and all went well. They took out two and put in a micro chip too. Sue in Pgh |
chester had a few baby teeth pulled when he was neutered at 6 months, better to get it done when they are under anesthesia for the one time and a good time to get a microchip as well if you are considering that |
I'd wait until all the teeth have come in before spay that way any baby teeth that haven't come out can be caught. My neighbour took her dog in too early for a spay and then later had to go back and get her baby teeth taken out |
Bailee Got Spayed 2 Attachment(s) Bailee was spayed yesterday @ 7 1/2 months! she also had 6 baby teeth pulled too. |
