Titer vaccine question I had Betty Boop titered for Parvo, Distemper. The vet just called me and said that the Parvo is positive, which means she still has immunity in her system. However, the Distemper came back negative, which means she no longer has immunity. The vet told me the Distemper vaccine is not a separate vaccine, but that it is combined with the Parvo vaccine (which is still in her system). I asked if she could get the Distemper vaccine by itself and she said NO. Does anyone know if the Distemper can be purchased by itself? I sure hate to vaccinate her again with Parvo since the titer shows it still in her system. I don't want to over vaccinate. |
YES, as of several years ago distemper singles were available. Used once on Ellie when this same thing happened. Vet had to order a box (more than one dose). Maybe that is the problem. By the way, after boosting Ellie her distemper titer was low (borderline) again the year after. Never gave it again. Protective levels are likely lower than what the lab sets as minimum. |
A lot of time the vets do not want to be bothered separating diseases out....it is easier and cost effective for them to give the combo, so they will tell you they cant separate it out or it doesnt exist....Galaxy-D, manufactured by Schering Plough, is a single canine distemper vaccine packaged for dogs. Many other dog vaccines are “combo” shots – they include distemper, parvo, or other disease vaccines in one shot. Galaxy is one of the only ones strictly for canine distemper. |

Thank you! I sort of figured she was just telling me that. Can the general public purchase a single vaccine and then take it to the vet? I'll do some research. |

Btw, a negative titer indicates no humoral immunity, but the dog can still have cell-mediated immunity. |
Dr Schulz has done studies that show even if the titer come back with no immunity it doesn't mean your dog is unprotected. If you are getting her a vaccine annually that shows every year a no immunity wouldn't you wonder why. If you do chose to vaccinate again have the titer run again within a few months and see if the immunity still shows. Could animal vaccinations be poisoning pets? | Latest News - Home |
