Larger food for Teacup yorkie?
 

My yorkie is almost 1 year old now and I'm wanting to switch him to an adult food. Currently he is on Wellness puppy(regular size..not toy breed) he has no issues with this. I bought him the Wellness Core seafood as its ingredients and composition is MUCH better but I am now realizing just how large the food pieces are. He is roughly 4.5lbs. I'd prefer not to put him on the Wellness toy breed adult food as its a complete gimmick but I want to know if he is ok with the big food? He seemed to chew it up fine but I don't want him to choke.

I've never seen any issues with the smaller guys. My friend has 4lb and 6lb yorkies who eat Acana (which is fairly large) really well. :) As long as he's eating it, it should be fine!

There is no such thing as a teacup it was a word made up by bad breeders to jack up the prices. It really I think depends on the dog if he can chew them and doesn't seem to be a problem then he is probably ok. Wellness Core does have a small breed version. My 18 pounder has a terrible time with big dog food in fact the food we finally found that is small enough and that she likes is Now small breed and it looks like cat food lol.

We also like that Wellness Core fish-based kibble that you're using! Teddy's coat was really great on that food!

If your pup is chewing the larger kibble, I wouldn't worry so much about whether it's too big or not. On the other hand, if your pup was vacuuming the food up, choking might be more of an issue to watch out for. I don't think it could hurt to switch to a small breed formula if you feel more comfortable with the kibble size though. A lot of times, those small breed formulas are a little higher in fat and protein (if not the same as the regular formulas) and just have a smaller size kibble which can be beneficial depending on your dog.

Just monitor your pup during meals and you should be fine...it sounds like he's doing a pretty good job with the larger kibble...I also remember thinking that the Wellness Core kibbles were kinda big when I fed it for the first time but I also think the blocky wedge shape kinda helps slow down the rate of eating...at least it seemed that way when I was feeding Toki the Wellness Core Reduced Fat. Toki used to get really small, flat kibbles caught in her throat and cough them back up because she would eat so fast...for this reason, I avoided small breed kibbles for her. Anyway, it just depends! I know several small dogs that do well with larger kibbles.

I used to feed Wellness Core & Princess was about the same weight as your pup back then (she weighs 5 #'s now). She didn't have any problems chewing that kibble.
