Sardines anyone?? I just picked up some sardines with no salt - packed in water at the store. Does anyone feed sardines to their pups? Macy and Molly come running when I open a can of tuna so I am hoping the smellier sardines will get the same reaction. |

One of our favorite toppers! Toki loves it. Sometimes I'll make a couple weeks worth of home cooked and mix in an entire tin of sardines for extra omegas and calcium. Good stuff! Stinky though! |

I get their sardines from Trader Joe's, it's unsalted & packed in spring water...they love it! It has 4 small ones in there, so I give them 2 split into 4 w/chopsticks loll. It's so cute to watch them take the food from the chopsticks. I save the other 2 pc in the fridge in a glass tupperware & give it to them 2-3 days later. I give this to them as omega treats twice a month. I would think it's ok to give it to them several x's a week. Good source of omega 3's & calcium if you give the bones too (since it's soft). It is fishy, so if you can stomach it, it's great for them! |

I agree with Jenny about it being okay several times a week...Toki has never had issues with getting a small amount everyday. If I didn't just mix the entire tin into a recipe, I'd probably give a good spoonful daily (like a couple teaspoons worth maybe)...my pups tolerate all kinds of various toppers very well so I'm not generally as conservative with the amounts if the food isn't high in fat/calories (like I'll just dollop a good spoonful of something instead of breaking out the teeny measuring spoons). And I remember when I had stockpiled a ton of large cans of TikiDog that I got on sale...they have a sardine cutlet variety so Toki would get a big ol' bowl of essentially just sardines (maybe 3 oz) for a meal twice a day and she suffered no ill effects and was just as happy as could be! But I don't think it would hurt to start off low with 1/2 tsp like you mentioned just to see how your pups handle it. One tin will last you a while! |
