Wallee has a couple of teeth that have a lot of build up too...thankfully we have a local groomer who brings in someone to do anesthetic free cleaning. I have seen the pics and she does an amazing job. Wallee will be going to see her next month to get these teeth done "without" being put under. He is also only turning 2 and I have tried very hard to brush his teeth almost daily. Of course he has only just started to let me brush well as it took this long for him to get comfortable with the process but it is too late to get the tartar off without a good cleaning. After seeing Mike's post about poor Jilly having to have 8 teeth pulled at the age of 4 even with brushing I am definitely going to take Wallee yearly to get this tartar taken care of.

Please look into the anesthesia free cleanings before doing them. They're really purely a cosmetic procedure. No idea what's going on under the gumline and they're not particularly safe or effective. It's kind of a false sense of security, really, because a dogs teeth could LOOK perfectly white, but still have issues.

Wow. Thanks for the info. Here in Canada most dentals at the vets start at around 700.00 but I guess it is still better to spend that.

Yikes! Yeah that is a lot. Jackson's was about $450 when all was said and done.

My 4-year-old Jillie just had 8 teeth removed yesterday. She had 3 removed at her only other dental, at 2-years. I've brushed her teeth almost daily since birth, so I'm quite disappointed.

I thought that since my 9-year-old has always done well with brushing that I wouldn't need to bring her in to annual dentals, but I'm obviously mistaken. My 9-year-old has lost no teeth and had his only dental at 6 years old.

Moving forward, I'm thinking of trying a sonicare on her. A YT friend does that and swears by it. She even got her vet to start recommending it. That and annual dentals. She's too young to be toothless.

I saw your post on FB Mike and I have to say it sure scared me. Wallee has teeth changing as well and he is just turning 2. I also brush his teeth but I know his mom's teeth are bad and she is only 4. I will be taking him in soon as well and fear it will probably cost close to 1000. Vets here are very expensive.

I'm sorry for your loss. :( Did you get bloodwork done prior? Did she have any prior health problems? Did she have an IV placed during the dental? etc?

I'm so sorry for your loss. My dogs are elderly now and still undergoing teeth cleanings. I wonder if your baby had an underlying health concern. It's very important to do preventative workups, and to have monitored anesthesia using the safest protocols. You have to be a smart consumer even in medicine. Perhaps you were, and I am not at all downgrading your extreme loss but I am tempering the fear I know people will have when reading this and they need to know that your experience is not common. Again, I'm so sorry for your loss. I'll continue to do dentals on mine, with anesthesia, using the best medicine I can find.

Teddy was 3.5 when he had 7 removed. Some were non-vital teeth. It's a genetics issue mostly. Mine would not accept the sonic care. One of my dogs used the electric petosan toothbrush for a while but he's the one who lost 7 teeth so like you, brushing almost daily didn't make a difference. I have done three dentals in less than 3 years on Winston and the dentist tells me that he has incisors at risk for future loss. This can't be for lack of home care or even dentals, and we are just working against the breed. At least Jillie scored with the tooth fairy just like my Teddy.

My yorkie had very bad tarter to the point I was going to have to take her to have them cleaned at the vet because nothing was working. I started putting coconut oil in her dry dog food daily and checked her teeth one month later, the tarter is GONE!

Coconut oil in the dogs food! My yorkies tarter has completely disappeared one month after putting coconut oil in her kibble daily. It's very good for them as well as helping keep their teeth clean

While that it great the tarter came off her teeth, you have no idea what is under the gum line, which is why professional dental should be done.

Unfortunately I can attest that most of the time 80% that if your yorkie needs a cleaning the 1st time it's going to be under sleep where the vet goes in there and does a thorough tartar removal. This is just the curse of being a Yorkie.

I've tried about 3 non anesthesia before they all told me mine were too far gone beyond and needed a vet go under. And trust me for the past 3 yrs I've been using that Petzlife gel brushing too so it's not like he's been neglected but this is just the nature of the beast.

Mine last year they took out total of 7 including 1 canine which now leaves his tongue daggling out cause the canine is no longer there to hold it in place. But you guys will feel relieved when it's done they go in there when he's under and the remaining teeth are sparkling bright white clean.

The total damage was about $450 which is not bad for 7 extractions. If you go to one like I did initially quote me for $1200 run the hell as far and fast as you can when they have the nerve to give you a quote like that. Thank god in this day 7 & age we have things like Yelp so do a little research in your area & Im sure you'll find somebody.
