Reasons for constant itching? Hi all, I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas on what could be causing one of my pups to be constantly itching. She's 4yrs old and she's a yorkie/papillon mix. She's not had itching issues in the past. I've checked her for fleas and found nothing. I've given her two baths in oatmeal shampoo. She's been on the same food since I got her (so doubt it's a food allergy). She did recently go on a trip with me to Florida. And the itching started the day we got home. Its going on two weeks now. I noticed two small bumps about the size of a bug bite on her that day, but again no live fleas to be found. She is mostly itching and biting on her back legs and also up her sides a little. Today she's scratching so much she's pulling small tuffs of hair out. Any thoughts on what could be causing the itching??? Dry skin maybe? Although I haven't seen any dry patches. Where, specifically, is she itching when she does? Also, when you mention the back legs....is she chewing/licking her back paws (or front)? Given this very suddenly happened and the red bumps, I do have to wonder about a pest or some kind of contact allergy (like a plant or something?). I wonder if she got bit by fire ants and is very irritated from it (?). How long ago was the trip, btw? I would skip the oatmeal shampoo as, despite the myth, it's actually not good for dogs w/ skin issues. Instead, I'd try a medicated shampoo like this one:  Amazon.com: SynergyLabs VF Clinical Care... You may even want to consider this spray: Amazon.com: SynergyLabs VF Clinical Care... One thing you might try is giving her Benadryl 3-4x a day (any less than that is not effective) and see if it works. If it does work, then you have a clue that it could be a histamine reaction (allergy reaction) to something. If it doesn't work, then I'd probably be soon taking her to the vet. |
Sorry to hear about your baby's scratching:( My Bailey was scratching a while ago and when I did go to the vet's, he got an antihistamine shot and I changed his food and, happy to say, he stopped all scratching:) These guys can sure worry us and it is frustrating that they can't talk. Hoping the that suggestions given by others here will give you some clue to what is causing this. |
Thanks for the reply! When shes biting/scratching it i mostly up high on her back legs, but also a little towards her sides/belly. No biting/licking of the feet. I too thought maybe she had been bitten or gotten into a plant. However, we have been back home for almost two weeks. Is it possible she is reacting that long? I will look into that shampoo and spray! I think I may take her into the vet this afternoon just to get her checked since we have to take one of my other little ones in for a regular appt. Thanks! |
dog What did she eat? I always check the food for allergy. A friend's dog had allergy tests to find out he is allergic to cotton and grass. Hope you get to the root of the problem. |

Hmmm, spider could be possible given the ridiculous amount of the in Florida! Nope, no new food/treats. No new bedding/clothes/detergents. |
Hi All, Thanks again for all the replies and suggestions! Took Rory in to the vet this evening and while they are unsure the exact cause she said it is likely an allergy of some type (probably something she was exposed to during our trip). She was given a shot of a steroid and is on something similar to benadryl for the next two weeks with the hope that this will clear it all up. |
Glad to hear that you took her in and that there was something for her. How is Rory doing now that it's been a couple of days? I had finally taken my Bailey in at the time, but thought that it would get better which it didn't. He bit most of his back end hair and he looked like he was wearing mukluks. As his hair is fine, it happened over time and I didn't notice it right away:( That was a few months ago, and happy to report all has grown back and more importantly... no scratching:) |
Thanks for checking up on her :-) She seems to be doing pretty good, but is on the antihistamine for another week still....hoping it doesn't act up again when she goes off that. Also, glad to your your baby Bailey is still not itchy! It's so worrisome when they get sick! |
