Heartworm pill Napoleon will NOT eat his! Its Heartgard and I broke it up into pieces-but he will have nothing to do with it. He doesnt like canned food-so I cant really mix it in anything. Any advice? Heather |
Is there any treats he likes? try to mix with that....or anything else he will eat. That is weird that he doesn't wanna eat it...try to give it to him before he eats his meal:) |
You might wanna get another whole one and try again. The first time my dog spit it out and I just kept putting it back in and he finally took it. You could do this with the broken pieces also but he may not get all of it. The second time I put it in my hand and let him sniff. He took it on his own. Someone else recently had this problem too so your not alone. |
Yes..and just to make sure we are on the first page, you got the chewable tablets right? |
my vet told me to just put some peanut butter on it, and he should eat it!! |
Okay, I have a stupid question. At what age do they start taking heartworm medicine. My pup is 15 weeks old yesterday and I've never given him anything for heartworms. |
Stick it to some peanut butter and then rub it on the roof of his mouth. He pretty much wont' have a choice but to swallow it. I tried everything too. It's difficult to get them to take anything! |

Taking the pill and wrapping it in some american sliced cheese works well too. (It will look like a small little ball, the size of a pea) The peanut butter is a great trick also as mentioned. |

I had the same trouble with Maddie, she would spit it out. I change her to the tablet and rap cheese around it. She gobbles it down. They can be little toot, but we do what we have to to keep them healthly...........Cindy |
Carter began his heartworm med (Interceptor) at 6 months (when we got him). He eats it like it is a treat. No fuss. |
Try revolution revolution is for heartworms, fleas, ticks, and ear mites. You just place it on the back of their neck once a month. Bella won't eat her heartgaurd either so we have to use this. Jordan |
Thank-you...Thank-you....... Whoa...so glad you posted this....I forgot to give the Heartguard yesterday.....I am forever forgetting that I give that on the 14th!!!!!! But this was Lil Bit's FIRST dose and she gobbled it right up! The vet usually recommends giving heart worm prevention (in our area) around 3 months.....no later than 6 months... But Lil Bit is kinda 'little' so he said wait until March (Lil Bit is now 4 1/2 months) I have often wrapped meds in cheese...but Heartguard is kinda big..may be hard to 'hide' it! |
