Food/treatment for a dog with Chronic UTI's
 
Hey all...

Wondering if anyone can point me to a good OTC food and or natural supplements for a dog who has chronic UTI's(Not my dog).

The dog has had 2 UTI's within the past few months and has been on antibiotics for it again. He is currently eating Wellness Core Small Breed. If asked, the vet will most likely recommend Science Diet U/D which my friend is not going to want to feed.

Is there anything else he can do to help prevent the UTI's??

UTIs aren't food related and won't be controlled by dietary change. Was a urine culture done? imaging?

They did a urinalysis on him. I don't think they did anything else though...except give antibiotics.

They need to culture the urine and do a sensitivity to make sure they are treating with the right antibiotic and for the correct amt of time. If they UTI recurs then either it was not treated properly and didn't clear or the dog has some other problem causing the chronic problem. Diet for UTI is not appropriate, the dog needs medications. If find a new vet if mine wanted to treat a UTI with a bag of dog food.

This is so true, if the antibiotic is given for long enough, a few bacteria will remain and they grow and become resistant to that antibiotic and so a super infection occurs. Some people don't give all the antibiotic which is just asking for trouble and some doctors will give a therapeutic dose of it even after it looks like the infection has cleared up, and this usually keeps the infection from popping up again. Of course plenty of fresh water should always be made available, as well as not crating up the animal for long periods of time so that it has to hold it's urine for too long.

He's got a doggy door, so he can go outside anytime he wants...and fresh water. He's bought one of those water fountains hoping to entice him to drink more. He keeps licking his privates raw though, which is how we knew his UTI was back again. The vet didn't suggest a diet change. I did as I thought that it might be what keeps causing him problems.

I am not sure how long he had him on medication before. Maybe he didn't give it long enough. He was doing fine for a month or 2 and then the UTI came back.

I know that his last owners reported that he had a few accidents around the house before they surrendered him and he doesn't do that now. I am wondering if he had UTI's before and that's why he was peeing at their house, because he seems pretty darn potty trained. I babysat him for a week and he didn't have one accident in my house.


Poor guy...hopefully he clears it this time. He should probably go back and have the vet check it to make sure...and if it comes back again, then we know it's something more than just a random thing.
