how much do I feed her I have a 15 month old 5 lb yorkie..how much should she be eating a day and what food is recomended to feed her?any help is greatley appreciated! |
Well, all dogs are going to be different. I find that the bags are always way over-estimates. I feed my 17lb active Yorkie 1/2 cup per kibble per day (of a 430 kcal/cup kibble), plus he gets some wet food, and treats/occasional chews, so I try to account for those added calories. He does very well on this amount of food and keeps a nice body condition. I will up it to 2/3 cup per day if he's extra active (i.e. swimming, hiking, etc). My friends Yorkies eat about 1/4 cup per day and they're about 5lbs. |
I feed a variety of foods (kibble, canned, dehydrated, etc.) and my favorites that I always go back to are Fromm, Wellness, Natural Balance, and Earthborn. There are a lot of other good options out there too. I feed Toki (8 pounds, 2 1/2 years) homecooked or wet food...with canned, she usually gets a little over six ounces of food each day (usually equal to around 1/2 a large can although I try to find the caloric equivalent volume-wise to what I know she will maintain her weight on since it varies between brands). Teddy (9 1/2 pounds, ~18 months) currently gets a little over 1/2 cup of Earthborn Great Plains Feast kibble with a couple spoonfuls of various canned foods each day. He's more muscular and doesn't keep weight on as easily as Toki does so he gets quite a bit more calories than she does although their weights aren't drastically different. Although most foods will recommend 1/2 cup of whatever kibble for a 5 pound dog, I would imagine just based on my personal experience that is probably too much to start with. Teddy who is nearly 10 pounds maintains his weight on pretty much that same amount of food. Even when I fed Toki kibble, she only got 3/8 cup. Dog Food Calculator That's a good calculator to give you a starting point based on your dog's weight, activity level, and the cal/cup of whatever kibble you end up picking. Just be sure to assess her body condition and weight weekly and adjust the amount of food accordingly. |
it has to do with there activity level, age and what brand of food, chester barely gets 1/2cup plus his wet food and he is over 11 yrs and not real active at least not in winter and he eats acana |
