Feeding in crate?
 
Here's my question...

What do you do when dinner time is when you are away and the puppy is crated?

Last night we had to go out early so I left her food in the crate. I normally NEVER leave food in the crate, only treats when she is in there during the day, never at bedtime.

Thoughts?

Most people say don't leave them food in their crate but my mom always has with her Chihuahua and I did when we first got Kiki because that is what she use to but now she doesn't use her crate at all unless we have to put her in it for safety. (Home repair, moving furniture)

You could have someone stop in on those days and feed him/her and take them out for potty break. If not you are bound to have accidents.

In my experience feeding them while crated (even treats/biscuits) can lead to mishaps. Peeing & Pooping in their cage, which goes against the rules of cage training all together. The whole idea is for them to have a safe place to be during those times we are not home and for them to not poop and pee in there. By you providing them with food and water and no outlet to relieve themselves they will end up doing it in their cage. Once started it is a very hard habit to stop!

If your pup is alone for long periods of time during the day maybe a different set up using a spare bathroom or puppy pen would be better. That way they could have their cage, food, water and puppy pads or news papers to use for potty time.

Thanks for the feedback . I will not do that again. If we are not going to be home for any meals , I will make arrangements for a neighbor to come by. We have also put gates up in our kitchen to keep her enclosed . Kind of like a giant x pen.
Appreciate all the advise , has been 20 yrs since I've had a furr baby!!

I agree that feeding a dog that is crated for more than a short time is going to promote accidents. When they have to go they have to go.

Change the feeding time.
