Sudden Bad Breath and Constant Licking Hello everyone! Been a while since I have posted but I need some advice. My little Jake just turned a year old in December. I've never noticed smelly breath with him but all of a sudden a few days ago his breath smelled like a dead animal!!! He has also been constantly licking.....the floor, his nose, our sheets on our bed, anything he's against, he will lick it. He's always licked us and his nose occasionally but nothing to this extent. He does seem like he feels kind of bad - just doesn't have as much pep as usual but will still play and run. Have you guys ever experienced this combination of strange behavior before? I have checked his teeth to make sure nothing is stuck and I don't see anything at all. Everything looks good. He seems to be eating, drinking, and going to the potty as normal. I'm clueless!! |
I would take him in..breath that bad could be infection. My Jada had a bean stem stuck in her gum a couple of weeks ago and it had scredded her gum tissue and set up infection within a day of getting stuck. Her breath was rancid and she was slobbering bad so I took her right in. She also was just acting off but still eating etc. |
Sometimes teething can cause really bad breath, but anal gland problems can cause a bad smell also. The glands around the anus will be too full and it's really foul smelling. Usually there are other symptoms besides the licking and that's scooting on the floor. Look around the anus and see if it's poufy. I agree with jadabug, it's time for a vet check. I've also heard that yeast infections in the ears can be very smelly. Bad smells always need to be investigated. |
Even though you can't see anything with his teeth, it's possible he could have a very bad infection in the teeth nonetheless, and/or an abscess...so I'd get his mouth checked out asap. I'd also wonder a bit about reflux - is he having any weird swallowing issues? Burping? |
