Help! Puppy/Cat eating each other's food! I am having a problem with my 2 yo cat wanting to eat Bailee's kibble . I have already had to move the cats kibble to the washing machine as Bailee will eat it if it is on the floor! (She won't eat her own, but likes cat food lol) I am thinking about putting Bailee's kibble in her crate?? I am still struggling with her eating any type of wet/mixture food, but she as of now, will eat Nature's Recipe Grain Free. I am on my 3rd choice of kibble, she is very picky Any suggestions or advise?? Nancy |
Well, if she eats a bit of it here and there, it's not the worst thing. Look at the nutritional analysis on the bags and compare - there are a lot of commonalities. If ALL she is eating now is the dog food, then her nutrition may become a little out of balance for her...is she still eating her own food too? One thing you might try is making her own food even more appealing for her - like maybe moisten her kibble w/ some water or chicken broth, sprinkle a bit fish oil/sauce on it, or get one of those liquid 'toppers' that are made for cat food. Otherwise, you might be stuck putting it in the crate. |
I agree with Ann, a little won't hurt. It has been awhile since I read about the differences in the foods -- something about cat food being super high in protein and fat and having maybe additional nutrients like taurine that cats need more of. I don't think all dog foods have it. The cat food is too rich for dogs, and dog food isn't rich enough for cats, if I recall correctly. |
Actually cats need to eat cat food not dog food. Cat food has taurine in it and cats need it or could go blind. I would schedule feed them in different rooms |
I don't have any advice with the trouble eating, except to keep trying different things. It may get costly, so call different companies and ask for samples. They'll send them to you for free and you can see if your baby likes it. :) As for eating other food... LOL I still have this issue every now and then with my 3 (1 cat, 2 dogs). They would all eat each others' food...so I started feeding them their own food but in someone else's spot (i.e., Thalia would eat Zeus' food, Zeus would eat Ody's, and Ody would eat Thalia's). Then they realized HEY! That's MY spot so it must be MY food! and then they went back to eating in the "right" spot, but was actually starting to eat the others' food... rofl. It got really bad at one point and I had to feed Thalia in a closed crate, Ody would get fed up high and Zeus was locked (with me......) in the bathroom. Zeus could then run around after he was done and couldn't get to Ody's (up high on his cat tree) or Thalia's (in her crate) and Thalia couldn't come out until she ate. Eventually they settled into routine and Zeus and Thalia aren't restricted into their separate areas. Every once in a while Ody and Zeus will try for Thalia's but not too often and they stop when I tell them to. It's the classic "Mooooom!! His/her food is better than miiiiiiiine!!" Except it's the exact same thing...ha ha. |
