Yorkie with Broken front leg :( 1 Attachment(s) Hi, my little baby Pebbles managed to fracture and displace her radius & ulna bones in her front left leg. My vet tried to externally fixate so he could bandage, but was unable, due to too much scar tissue building up. So now, her only option is surgery to put pins into the bones and re position them. (Orthopedic surgery isn't cheap....) Has anyone gone through this with their fur babies? I always knew Yorkies were prone to leg & knee injuries, (she had a luxating patella in her rear leg as a young pup, but has since grown out of it) but this one happened from just simply jumping off the sofa and landing wrong (shes a very spunky little thing) The Vet says they're confident that she will make a full recovery within 2 months if the surgery goes well. Looking for advice on what to expect:confused: |
Poor Pebbles, I am sorry both of you are facing this. I'm sure people who have been through this will post. I think one of hardest parts is keeping a Yorkie confined/inactive during the recuperation process. Best wishes for Pebbles for surgery to go well and for her to heal completely. |
went through the same thing a year ago, right down to the couch. she needed bone grafts plate andscrews. i wont kid u its a long process. the key is "no walking" i mean none. mine was for 6--8 weeks. i carried her or she stayed in her crate. i got sedatives for when she was going a little stir crazy and on occasion she did. i got a stoller and wheeled her around. i will tell u the orthopedist was amazed at the end that both her radius and ulna healed. he never expected her ulna to heal. now she runs around like it never happened. no more furniture jumping though and luckily she has no interest in it. the key is total rest on that leg. u can do it and she will be good as new. message me if u need more info.:) |
I'm so awfully sorry that little Pebbles is going through this misery and has such a long, painful and stressful road ahead of her and know the future looks very bleak to you right now. But I know that medical miracles exist and surgeons can work wonders!!! |
Prayers for a good recover after surgery for Pebbles. Many here have used strollers for various after surgery recoveries successfully. Did I miss how old she is? So sorry you folks have to go through this, but sounds like the prognosis is good. Best do luck. Keep us posted! |

good luck /sending healing prayers for you both |
No, ortho surgery is not cheap. YHR has had pups with this injury and it is costly. Trying to repair it without a plate and pins has only a 5% chance of working. I really don't know why vets do it to be honest because if it does not heal, then often bone grafting is necessary as kimp5 said. And, sadly, sometimes it is too late as was the case with Snickers one of the YHR foster pups. It was left too long and they tried grafting but it did not take. He ended up with an amputation. I hope you are using a specialist for this surgery. As for after the surgery, it is very important that she be quiet for the time period they will specify...usually 8 weeks. I have used a stroller with my last two ortho cases and they loved it...that way they go from room to room. You must either close it or leash her into it if you do that so that she does not jump out. Good luck and please keep us posted. |
