puppy having soft poop/ treat-food related we have a 12 week old puppy, he had a really soft runny poop yesterday. this is our 1st pet, we give him potty treats of tiny cubes of cheese or baby carrots. he also has some purina & milkbone treats. do any of these things make his stool too soft? he is on purina one smartblend, he goes to the vet this week & we plan on starting him on Wellness core or complete, just to give him a higher quality dry food. any advice would be appreciated!! thanks!! |
Welcome. Since he is so young and having runny poop I would try and get him to the vet right away just to make sure. It could be from new treats, new home or something else your vet could determine with a stool sample. Is he acting ok? Since yorkies are so small it's always best to have a vet check them out. Keep us posted. |
thanks for the advice, poop seems better today, still soft but not runny. He is going to the vet tom. & we will be taking a stool sample. He is acting like his normal fun, sweet, little ball of energy self so that makes me glad I don't think he is in any pain :) |
I would avoid milkbone and purina products and try a better quality kibble, for treats I recommend some cooked chicken or turkey, avoid carrots and cheese completely |
we are switching him over to wellness, the vet said to do it slowly over a 7 day period. I am also getting him some wellness puppy & petite treats. I'm just curious to why you think we should stop wt carrots & cheese?? I thought fruits, veggies, dairy,& meats were good for them? thanks!! |
Fruits dairy veg and cheese are not a normal part of a dogs diet. Many dogs don't have lactase in their system. They don't have the ability to break down the cellulose in plants. And your dog is too young to be throwing all that into their digestive tract at once. They need proteins natural fats and omegas to grow |
Be careful with treats at his age. Try rewarding him with a piece of his kibble instead of cheese or veggies. He is just too young for trying new treats. |
Thanks for all the great advice, looks like we will stick wt just dog food for now. |
