Baby teeth not falling off??
 
So my vet told me YT are known to not have all their baby teeth fall out and may need to be pulled. He reccomended doing this when he gets neutered around 6 months (a couple weeks away:eek:). His upper front teeth I can tell have not fallen because he has 3 small teeth growing on top of each other and looks awful :( Then his front bottom teeth, has one missing ( I am assuming the new one has yet to grow in??). I dont know if their is still time for these top baby teeth to fall out or should I get them pulled. He hasnt been eating much and I am worried his teeth are getting painful. HELP! :confused::confused:

I would suggest you get them pulled during his neuter it can be painful for them and if they havent fallen out yet chances are they wont. easier to do it in one step.

IMHO, I'd wait to get him neutered (x-ray for growth plate closure 8-12 months). Do any of his teeth appear to be loose? If so, they will more likely than not fall out on their own. If his teeth are that bad, I'd go ahead and just have a dental done, but I'd still wait on the neuter. (This is probably not going to be a popular opinion, lol, but I honestly believe what I'm saying). Brushing the teeth will help keep them clean and tug games with socks can help remove loose teeth.

Momo had 11+ (I think?) retained baby teeth pulled when he got neutered. He had double rows of shark teeth on top. You can play tug of war & it will help pull out the teeth...but in Momo's case, they were not budging. You can try moistening the kibble w/hot water or giving him canned food.

Sorry for my ignorance, but what is the growth plate? And how is his neutering affected by it? I have never heard of this. Been doing tug games, we do it everyday and they don't budge :(

I tried warm broth this morning and he barely ate a few kibbles, i get so stressed. Tug a war is our daily play so i think pulling them is our only option :(

Galen was 8 months when he got neutered and had his teeth pulled. He had 17 puppy teeth pulled.

I am curious to know if there is a specific reason you waited to 8 months to do the procedures? My vets says most dogs Are done before 6 months but d/t his teeth issues 6 months is sufficient time to wait. I don't want to have th pulled now and then have other teeth to be pulled. He has one tooth on his front lowers that has yet to come in.

I would get them pulled because they probably will not fall out on there own and leavening them for to long can cause food to get stuck between then and it will mess up the alignment of there mouth.

I agree with Kathy about waiting for his growth plates to close before

The growth plate is in the legs. If a dog is neutered too early, before the growth plates close, the leg bones will keep on growing, causing them to be more fragile or unbalanced, resulting in leg and joint problems at later ages in some dogs. Once the growth plates are closed, the leg bones stop growing, and it's safe to neuter. In Yorkies, growth plates typically close by 8 months, but a vet can do an x-ray to tell for sure. Not all vets are concerned about whether or not growth plates are closed before neutering--it's still controversial--but the safest thing to do is wait.

Thanks for the info! I think I will just wait 2 more months and do good teeth hygiene until then.

Yep.....I happened to look in my Yorkie's mouth, saw the double rows and thought what the heck is this? Max had 20 baby teeth pulled at the same time he was neutered. He was a little down for about a week, but pulled through like a champ. He was on pain meds for two days after the operation, and then he got over it. Brave little guy....is fine now...bright shiney white strong teeth all filled in. If you don't have them removed, they get infected, or so the vet said. I've found that Yorkies are incredibly courageous little guys.
