puppy gaining weight quickly We got our adorable Yorkie pup less than a month ago. He was just under 2 lbs. Today he weighed in at 2.6 lbs! We were told that would be approximately his adult weight. He's a week shy of six months (25 weeks today). I have been afraid of hypoglycemia, so I may be feeding him a tad too much, but am not sure how to gauge. He's not a big fan of kibble. So the breeder said to leave kibble available--(good luck with another (slightly jealous) dog in the house... ) He gets a small blob of canned food or cooked meat 2x a day, a spoonful of yogurt, a spoonfull of pumpkin, some greenbeans and treats for training which I break into super tiny pieces. He's always ready to eat anything except kibble. I was also trying to find a semi moist pellet food, so I could do the "Learn to Earn" program (by Dr. Sophia Yin):aimeeyork. Any words of wisdom from our Yorkie gurus out there? Is this a normal weight gain? He was super tiny until we brought him home. So tiny the breeder kept him a few extra months (and charged quite a premium--his siblings were twice his size, both parents were over 5 lbs).:animal-pa |
My little girl Tatiana was that weight at 26 weeks and she now weights 3.0 at 1 year. Talk to your vet and see if he thinks it is over weight. 2.6 is very tiny and I would not be concerned about the weight as long as he is healthy. |
I agree . . but seriously who could resist that array of delights you are feeding him. :D No wonder he is gaining rapidly. Once you get these little ones in the habit of eating a secondary food source its hard to get them to eat any dry kibble but not impossible. Have you tried mixing his wet food and cooked foods in with the kibble? The weight gain seems normal for a pup that age. Typically anywhere from 2-6 oz per week in the norm. They will continue to grow until they are about 15-18 months of age and than unless they are being overfed they will retain that weight to be the average. Hypoglycemia is caused by stress and lack of food and the proper amount of rest. As long as your pup is getting plenty of rest and three square meals per day he should do ok. Its important that he isn't overexerted and if he does that is when you would use the nutra cal. I'm not sure its such a good idea to be so dependent on it. He should be getting his strength form proper nutritional meals. I have only ever given Nutri cal if I suspect a pup is in need of a pick me up after playing and are possibly having a low sugar attack. |
