yorkie depression? I have a 4 1/2 year old spayed female yorkie. Shes my baby, I adopted her at 8 weeks old. My fiancee and I are going through a break up. Shes a very sensitive dog and is a huge daddys girl, although weve only lived together with the dog for about 10 months. My question is, how bad of a depression will she sink into? Is there anything I cam do, like medicines or little tricks to help make her feel better? Im at work about 9-10 hours a day also. I really dont wanna have to find someone to adopt her, does anyone have any advice? |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. I am very sorry you are going through a difficult time and that your little girl is depressed. Dogs are sensitive in general, and Yorkies, I believe are more so. I'm sure she misses your fiance and is feeling the effect of not having any company 10 hours a day. I'm sure you are tired after a long day. Does she get exercise and entertainment? Lack of activity will contribute big time to depression. My younger boy gets depressed in a single day if he doesn't have a long daily walk. I can only think of 3 solutions: A) Add another dog for company -- an expensive option considering the additional cost of vet care and other needs. You would have to find a compatible dog. Since you are working long hours, it would have to be an adult. No time for a puppy. B) Bring her to a daycare or hire someone to come in daily to play with her. Another expensive option. C) Re-home her, which I know would be heartbreaking. Yorkies are social animals and they need activity. |

Kristin gave you some great suggestions. Keep her active - take her for walks, and make play time a real priority; also keep her busy with some chew bones (when supervised, that is) as chewing is good for dogs. You could maybe try a dog park if that's your thing? I think the main thing is to keep her engaged, give her lots of love/attention, and make quality time with her. |
