2 year old Not eating...:animal36Stewart just turned 2. He started on dry food (Canin sp?) for Yorkies and he quit eating that early on so I started adding 1/2 container of soft dog food to try to get him to eat. He went to not eating dry dog food at all which my vet advised is actually better for them. To eating 2 containers of wet food a day 1 in the morning and 1 at night now he has basically quit eating the wet food to, I have tried adding warm gravy to his food tried several different types of food dry and wet. The vet said that he would not starve himself that he is holding out... for treats etc. however he has even started turning his nose up at some of his treats and hides them and will only actually eat 2 different kinds now. The last month or so he has started scratching his noes and whining on the left side he had to have his baby teeth removed last year. So I did not know if this could be a dental issue? or if he is just being picky? I see a lot of people on here that cook for their babies, did not know if that was a characteristic of yorkies?? I just want him to be healthy... He does act normal most of the time, but he does sleep a lot and doesn't play as much as he used (but I did not know if that was because he is getting older - out of the puppy stage) Any help or suggestions is appreciated!! did not know if this would require a vet visit? |
When was his last vet visit w/full blood panel test? It would be a good thing to do if it's been over a year. My guys never slowed down & they're 5-6 years old. Except 7 year old Mimi, she has more of a calm laid back personality & just lies there unless it's time to go out & she becomes an entirely different active dog. Some Yorkies can be picky & some will eat anything you put in front of them (like my boys). Mimi was very picky for the 5 years of her life. I've tried numerous kibbles, premade frozen & freeze dried raw & she'll get tired of them. She'll even get tired of toppers like scrambled egg whites after awhile. One thing she loves & never tires of is canned food. I found that she likes her kibble moistened, so her meal consists of moistened kibble w/a tablespoon of party animal canned food...for now. I do not give them any store bought treats. They do occasionally get fresh protein like boiled salmon if I happen to have it. I'm not sure why your vet said dried food is better, maybe he was referring to teeth? Canned food is superior to kibble bc of the moisture content & higher protein. It does however cause plaque to build up faster, so I brush my guys teeth every night. Hope you'll find what your guy likes...it seems like he likes variety! |
If he's been scratching at the side of his face and whining for a month, he needs to go to a vet. Immediately. The fact that he sleeps a lot and doesn't play as much is not typical of a 2-year old yorkie. I know mine is 4 and hasn't slowed down a bit. :) Please get him to the vet to have him evaluated. Meanwhile, try getting him to eat some plain boiled chicken mixed with rice to get something in him. Good luck and please keep us updated. |
