Pregnant Yorkie--diet??
 
My female yorkie is pregnant again. Last time, things didn't go so well. We didn't realize she was pregnant till it was too late, and I think part of the reason everything turned out badly was because she wasn't getting adequate nutrition. All the puppies ended up dying by their second week, even after our tireless efforts to bottle feed each one (since she refused to nurse them).
If I have my dates correct, I believe she will have her puppies by the end of January. I have recently switched her over to puppy chow since I have read that has more calories and nutrition. Is there anything else I can do to make sure she is in tip top shape?? I have read you can feed them cottage cheese for more nutrition.
Any help is greatly appreciated!!! :)

Did you have autopsies done on the babies since the entire litter died? It would be good to know what the cause of death was.....hopefully, it isnt an issue going on with your female or your breeding pair. Did you breed her back to the same male?

The puppies were all hypoglycemic. The reason was because she wouldn't nurse them. So I'm also trying to find tips to get her to nurse better this time. I think nutrition is a start for now.

I would suggest you learn how to tube feed the puppies so if you run into that issue again, you can successfully nourish the babies.

I feed RC HT42d to all my females, from first day of estrus, thru their 42nd day of gestation. I also have complete lab work done when my ladies are confirmed pregnant. I think it useful to "know for a certainty" where I am with electrolytes, blood count, kidney function. I do not leave anything to guessing or assumption. I recheck electrolytes after the pups are born, and if it is a large litter, I will follow her calcium closely.....crisis prevention rather than crisis management. If momma refused to feed them first time around, she may do it again...be prepared.

If things went so badly last time why did you not get her spayed instead of breeding her again?

Thanks yorkiemom1, we will look into tube feeding them and see if we can get some help with that. We may hire someone to help us out with that. Thanks for your help! I appreciate it :)

A friend of mines dog had little chi puppies and they all ended up being hypoglemic and her vet helped her with the tube feeding. Maybe if you trust your vet enough he or she can help you with it just in case. I would definitely talk that over with your vet and keep that in mind.

Well this is a public board so your gonna get lots of different answers. Obviously your dog was not mothering like she should so why would you go through this again and possibly end up with dead puppies? What if she has a larger litter and you have to feed them all by hand every two hours?

This is a public board and since you posted here, anyone who reads it has every right to post there views on what you wrote.

Personally, based on your other posts, I completely concur with LovetoDream88. You have every indication that your bitch is not breeding material, yet you put her in that position again and you failed to do your homework before hand. Hopefully these pups won't suffer the same fate because of your ignorance.

All lovetodream did was ask a simple question that some of us were already wondering. She wasn't judging you or criticizing you.
