To Vaccinate or Not to Vaccinate?? Age Limit?? So I've been thinking a lot about another post I've been following where the pup was a senior and got vaccinations and now the dog is severely sick...My dog is now 10 years old and in a few months, he is going to be due again...do I get them or do I skip them?? He has gotten all of his vaccinations every year since he was a puppy. He is primarily an indoor dog other than his walks and short potty trips outside. He's had some health problems over the past year....digestive issues and possible neurological issues....I am not sure I want to take the chance and have something go wrong...on the other hand, I don't want to skip them and him get sick. When is a good age to cut off the vaccinations?? Or is there ever a good age?? |
I think Peek A Boo's vet stopped vaccines for him at age 10, he even stopped the Rabies (special exemption). In the YT Library there's a few posts by Dr Shultz about the efficacy of vaccines, in a nutshell: after the first year puppy shots and 1st year booster, most are good for 15 years. You could request titers instead, to check the level of any particular antibody. We still do 3 yr Rabies on the girls bc It's the Law (here). |
No. Don't get any more vaccinations is my opinion lol. Lots of evidence proving they last 7+ years. More likely 15. I would never get a 10 year old dog any more vaccines. Rabies IS required by law, and that's not something I'm willing to break (not because I don't think he's protected, moreso for his protection againist the law, if something were to ever happen, I wouldn't want him in quarantine, etc). One of my Rainbow Bridge babies, Ashley, developed an enlarged heart close to her eleventh birthday. My vet stopped all of her vaccinations, including rabies. We walked miles each day, and Ashley lived to a month shy of seventeen. I'm sure she was fully protected from her earlier vaccines. |
No dog needs yearly vaccinations unless you are talking about Lyme, Lepto or Bordatella. |
I definitely will continue Rabies vaccinations....but honestly, it's not because I think he'd ever be bitten by a rabid animal. I am more afraid of him biting someone else...and the consequences of that if he did not have a rabies vaccine. I used to work for the vet and I've seen how they test for rabies. Perhaps they've found a better way these days but I could never let that happen to my dog. I think I am going to hold off on the rest...perhaps I will talk to my bet about testing his levels. From the little I've heard, the tests are a lot more expensive than the vaccinations themselves...does anyone know if that's true?!? Even if it costs more, I am sure it's a drop in the bucket to what it would cost if my guy had a negative reaction to the vaccines. |
