Feeding 2 Dogs 2 Different Brands?
 
Hi, we currently feed Acorn (1yr) "Natural Balance" Salmon & Rice because she is allergic to chicken and grain. Any other food makes her vomit :/

Our breeder strongly recommends keeping our new puppy on a puppy chow (she prefers Purina...), and I know we will have to feed the new puppy the food she is use to at first.

However, Acorn hates her food, and tries to eat every other dog's food out there! I am afraid she will try to get this puppy chow and then get sick. However, I do not want to make a drastic change in puppy 2s food, as she needs to be weened off. Also, should she be on puppy chow? I don't want to have to limit the time the food bowls are out, because Acorn hardly eats as it is.

Any suggestions on having 2 dogs on 2 different foods? Any thoughts on how necessary puppy chow is?

So sorry that you pup has food issues.

When ever my pups are in need of being on a special diet I feed them in their cage.

Works great !

I think NB is all life stages (please double check), so it will be ok for the puppy to eat that. Food specifically for puppies has more calories & higher vitamins & minerals like calcium for growth. Like Dawn suggested, maybe feeding them in separate rooms might help if your guys are not used to cages.

Oh, I'll have to check if they're all stages- that'd be perfect! Thanks for the advice :-)

YVW. I fed NB years ago when Momo was a puppy & emailed them bc I wanted to know how can puppies eat the same food as adults. They said it's ALS & I just need to feed more for growing puppies. This was more than 5 years ago, so you might wanna double check!

And we've fed Natural Balance to all age groups of dogs. NB is the food of choice for my parents' dog though and Toki and Teddy still eat it when we come to visit although it is lower in fat than I'd like for growing puppies. Teddy came to us on Natural Balance Organic formula when we got him at like 10 months old and his coat was so dry/brittle, his skin was flaky, and he was bone thin. The calorie and fat content of NB tends to be on the low side so I think part of it was Teddy not being able to eat a large enough volume of this food to maintain good weight and good coat condition. Once we switched him to something higher in fat and calories, that really improved his condition (I think we started him on Royal Canin for a little while and eventually switched him to Wellness Core).

I would go ahead and try to feed both dogs the same NB Salmon formula (once your pup gets settled in and adjusts to her new environment) since it is an all life stages formula and just monitor your puppy's body condition and make sure she is doing all right on it.
