Do Yorkies "grow out" of motion sickness?? I've had my little guy for a month, and he throws up on every car ride, even short ones. He's 17 wks. I bought him a FidoRido car seat but he still vomits every time. Has anyone had experience with their yorkie growing out of motion sickness issues?? My poor baby! I hate to leave him at home but I hate that he's so uncomfortable on every car ride! :(:( |
A lot do but some do not. I was hoping mine did but she didn't. I give her hydroxyzine every time we have to go in the car. Occasionally she has done it with out the medicine but sometimes she can not. You might want to ask your vet about something to help the poor little guy. |
Non Drowsy Dramamine usually will work but not always. If he/she is less than 3 lbs give 1/4 tab, if bigger 1/2 tab would be fine. Give about an hour before you plan on a car ride. Don't use regular Dramamine, has to be the non drowsy formula. |
Yes, some grow out of it. My Meika used to throw up exactly at 30 minutes into a ride for the first year. Not any more. |
As long as mine can see out of the window, he does ok, except for one twisty turny mountain road on the way to my parents. He vomits in the very same spot every time. He used to get sick every time we went on a car ride until I learned that seeing out of the window helps quite a bit. We have never tried meds, we just have it down pat where it is gonna happen. He gives me "the look", I hold out the towel, he vomits, all is better. |
We have a rescue that we got at 7 months. Up until about a year and a half, he threw up at least once every single time he was in a car, whether it was for 5 minutes or an hour. On a 7 hour car ride, he threw up no less than 20 times. He was really GOOD in the car (would immediately roll up and fall asleep), but we just couldn't manage to settle his stomach. We've tried children's Gravol, a herbal motion sickness drop, and Rescue Remedy (all together, and all separate) with some success. He did the best when we gave him a gravol about an hour before we left (ie would throw up 8 times on a 7 hour trip instead of 20+). We also tried him in a Thunder Shirt to no avail. He's now just over 2 and is perfect on short rides. If we're just in the city, while we still bring paper towel along, I can't remember the last time he threw up which is so relieving! We haven't taken him on the 7 hour trip in over a year, opting instead to leave him with relatives because I fear that he'll be very similar to what his puppy self was. My friend also had a retriever that threw up on every car ride until the day she turned 2, and then she was perfect. EDIT: I should also add that we had tried him in a crate, a booster seat, with a seat belt harness, and on our lap with no real differences in the severity of his motion sickness. |
My Abby got horribly carsick as a puppy- my dd had to go to the vet(a 10 minute drive) with us to hold her wrapped tight in a blanket. She is just over two now and we have been very lucky on short rides for the past few months. We have always used a Lookout car seat (thankfully washable!),I would time her meals etc but I think she is just growing out of it.YAY! |
