Questions on teeth When I got Piper she had horrible breath and teeth. Her canines were almost black they were so bad. After her first vet appointment the vet said that she had a retained baby canine and it would need to be pulled out. About a month later that baby canine fell out on its own. Is it normal to for them to lose a baby tooth at 1 year? I was a little shocked beings the vet said that it needed to be pulled. I started feeding Piper a raw diet the end of August and today as I was doing her grooming I decided to make her let me look at her teeth. She seriously has no plaque on her teeth at all. Before you could see the plaque buildup on her teeth. Her canines have a little bit of a brown color to them at the gums but no longer black and she no longer has horrible breath. Is this from feeding her raw food or ??? I'm extremely happy with the leaps and bounds that she has made since we got her. |
I've heard feeding raw does help keep the teeth clean. And yes, it's normal for a baby tooth to fall out on it's own, if not, then they need to be removed by the vet. |
I had heard that it will help keep the teeth clean, also, but I didn't know that it would actually remove plaque that was already there. I'm very happy though as I was a little nervous about having her teeth cleaned, because I know a lady here in town who's dog died while getting his teeth cleaned. |
I have heard raw keeps teeth pretty clean! That's great! However, don't be scared of dentals. Sometimes they are just necessary, as they get up under the gumline. Aesthetically, teeth can LOOK clean/good, and not be... so she will probably need a dental in the future, especially if she already was very prone to plaque. The anesthesia is very safe and if you get proper bloodwork and follow new protocols, she will be fine. :) |
Thank you, Britster! How will I know if she needs her teeth cleaned? I bought her the end of July, she was a rescue dog. The lady that rescued her had her on crap dog food and when she was rescued she was being fed bird seed. She has come so far in a few short months! |
