Itching, biting paws.. Has anyone ever had the problem with itching, licking, and biting paws? I took my baby to the vet and they said it could be a skin infection. I have been doing these special baths every 3 days and I dunno... i dont think they are working. |
oh boy...I never had that even with my previous dogs but it must be very frustrating. I'm glad you went to the vet. Maybe you should call your vet and let him/her know the situation. Maybe its as simple as just letting him walk on something grainy. |
You may want to check the ingredient list on the food you are feeding your baby. It seems that a lot of babies on here have an allergy to corn. If corn is in the food you are feeding, then that may be the cause and you may need to change foods. Good luck to you! |
My baby does the same thing and i actually posted about it a few weeks ago and someone told me that it could be the cleaning products you use. I dont know. I changed his food and my cleaning products and he still does it. It's not very sever so I think it could just be a bad habit. |
My Japanese Chin / Poodle mix does this and chews on his feet constantly. At first I thought it was food allergies, so we put him on the duck and potatoe food, but that didn't work. Found out it is airborn allergies, just like we have, except instead of sneezing and having a runny nose, it bothers his skin. He now had to have children's Benadryl every day, but that helps a whole lot. Good luck! |
Wow! I am really glad I found this thread...I was going to post about this myself. I've been having the same problem with Trixie for about the past 2 days. Constantly licking and biting her foot...just seems to be one. I checked (late) last night and around the pads of her foot are swollen and red looking...not extremely, but noticably. We did change her food this weekend. Maybe that is it...I will try another food and see if this changes? I'd already said if she was still doing it today, I would take her to the vet. Really helpful info here...thanks everyone! Would love to get more feedback if anyone else has anything to add? :) |
I think its allergies. It could be allergies to the food you are feeding or skin allergies. |

You actually have to keep them on that food with no treats or anything for 2 months to figure out if they are allergic to the food. It's not just corn that they could be allergic to and so what you are trying to do is use a food that does not contain any of the foods that you were feeding them. Does that make sense? And no, it is not harmful to use Benadryl on a daily basis. During the summer time when the allergens are worse, he has to have 1 in the morning and 1 in the evening along with a fatty acid supplement. During the winter, we just cut him back to 1 in the evening. I would suggest sticking with the diet for the 8 weeks and not feeding any treats or people food (this was the hardest part for me as he loves bones) and if that doesn't work, go to the vet and see what they say. While it's not harmful to have them on Benadryl, I would not recommend diagnosing your pup yourself as it is never good to medicate unnecessarily. |
thanks! :) I will try the food idea you suggested. |
My NIna drove me crazy with her licking and biting her paws, did everything from changing diet, shampoos even giving her Benadryl which helped a bit, the food I am giviing her now is Solid Gold all natural puppy food. I have noticed that she really doesn't lick nor bite as much only really when she goes out at night and steps on the moist grass and when she starts the biting or licking I spray cortizone on her and that does the trick. My vet is convinced that it is all air borne allergies.. Good Luck |
I will keep fingers crossed for you! I have been going through that with my poodle for approx 10 yrs now. She is allergic to everything! Prednisone is the only thing that helps and that is definitely not good for them. |
I would say that it's allergies. My Lacy has allergies and has to get allergy shots every 2-3 months. When she starts licking her paws and scratching like crazy I know it's about time for her shot. My vet says that licking and biting at the paws are signs of allergies. |
My mom's doxy is allergic to grass and will chew his feet in the summer when the grass is green - however, here in the winter that is probalby not the problem. He is only allergic to bermuda grass, not St. Augustine which is what I have in my yard and they live with me now so he doesn't have the allergy any longer. |
