I think your question really depends on the dogs health and should be something you consult with your vet about. If you are leery about letting a regular vet do the cleaning, perhaps you should consider a dental specialist. I am going through the same thing with my 10 y.o. Its been 1.5 years since his teeth cleaning and it shows. I've started brushing his teeth, but it doesn't take off all the plaque that's already there. Per my vets advice, we've held off bc of medical issues...but hopefully we can get them cleaned soon. Yorkies are notorious for having bad teeth. If it were another breed, it may not be such a big issue to do an annual cleaning every year, but with these guys, it's a must. My 2 y.o is due for his 2nd cleaning and he needs it AND I brush his teeth!! I've seen dogs with no teeth by age 5 because they didn't have dentals so it's definitely NOT something us yorkie owners can ignore. It's just part of having a yorkie!! |
One thing I am lucky for is that GiGi has beautiful...even Vets have commented on how straight and beautiful they are. I would hate to have her loose any. She does not have periodontal disease (luckily). But she is now showing plaque build up on the back molars. So yes I will consult with the Vet...I can probably get away with not getting it done but who knows she may live to 20 (Oh how I hope) and a cleaning now would be better. Btw I do brush their teeth but sometimes I can not keep up with it cause of work etc. But I try to do the furs teeth right after I do mine. Thanks again Tina |
