Low sugar issues Hello everyone Boy did I have a scare yesterday. I came home from running errands and my little guy louie who is 15 weeks old was just lying on his side in his kennel. I opened the door he didn't run out to me or anything he just laid there. I picked him up he couldn't even hold his head up. I rushed him to the vet and here he had low sugar it was like 46 and its supposed to be in the 90-100'. So they gave him a syringe full of sugar water very small amount of karo syrup with the rest of water. after about 15 minutes he was back to his wild puppy self :). The vet said these little guys are more prone to this and hopefully he will grow out out if. So now if he seems real lifeless. just give him a syringe full of the sugar water and he should be fine. But for sure don't mistake being sleepy or something more serious as it being low sugar I would take him to the vet to check first. Hi - get yourself some Nutra-Cal and keep it handy. These little ones can go out quickly. I also give mine some Honey Nut Cherrios when they play hard. Gave them to my little Biewer at nighttime when he was tiny - still give it to both my dogs as treats, especially when they are romping in the yard. |

Make sure after you give him the sugar water you get him to eat some food or he will just crash again. |

I never used sugar water. Unless you have a syringe it is hard to get it into them. You can buy a syringe in the pet shops, though. Nutra-Cal is specifically for low blood sugar. They sell it in the pet shops as well. You can also use Karo syrup in an emergency. I use Honey Nut Cherrios for a snack especially at night if they are tiny (and my Biewer was tiny) and when my two puppies play hard. Cheerios is a great treat. |
As long as your pup is eating, his sugar level shouldn't drop...did he eat b4 you left to run errands? You need to feed him small meals several x's a day. Nutri-cal is helpful if they're not eating, it will raise their blood glucose level, but it needs to be followed by food. Also handy for a hypoglycemic attack, but if they have an attack, a vet needs to be seen asap. If the dog is eating well, nutri-cal is not needed bc the food is regulating their glucose level. If nutrical is given too much or for a long period of time, it can cause diabetes, it's basically corn syrup. My vet informed me of this. |

You may want to find a vet that is used to working with small dogs, toy dogs, especially Yorkies. |
