Itchy Yorkie :( Hey Guys! My little Hanako has been itching ALOT the past year. We've already been to the vet countless of times and it drains the money from my pocket.. She always gives me the same response of seasonal allergies... But it's been about a year and she still scratches. (especially around the eye area. She just started scratching her belly on the carpets :/) I'm wondering if anyone has been through this situation. Any tips would be great! I've been trying to see if she's allergic to her food, but no change so far. [We make her homemade meatballs. Usually has ground beef/pork, some bread, carrots, peas and then it's baked] |
We are going through this right now with Kayla. We tried lemon mist, and apple cidar vinagar which both helped but after awhile she started to itch again. We gave her children's benedryl and tonite I am going to try Gold BOnd powder. They say to dust them all over and that it really works. We will see tonite. GOod luck with your baby. I feel so sorry for them. Its terrible for us and them too. |

So, are her itchies seasonal or year round? If seasonal, then you may want to medicate during the season with OTC anti histamines, Temaril-P, steroids. If year round, then you want to consider (if OTCs don't work) Atopica and/or allergy testing and shots. I've dealt with allergies in 2 of mine, and they are so complicated and tough to deal with...so I really feel your pain. Here is a Library thread on approaching allergies too: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...tart-here.html |
dog Check the food and its contents. A lot of time that is the problem. How about shampoo you use? Do they run in the grass? Stop doing that. Do not go to dog parks, dogs pick up a lot of stuff from those places. Try a venison diet. It works for allergy dogs. |

What does the vet normally do? It doesn't sound like food allergies, but if you are changing diets for a trial make sure it is novel or it's a waste of time. Either a hydrolyzed rx food for twelve weeks or a homecooked diet of one novel protein and one novel carb... |
I'd say stay away from fibrous foods like fruit and veg. If it's not an environmental allergy, as was the case with my friends dog, who did everything her vet told her, it could be diet. Those allergies usually mean there is a weakened immune system so something inside isn't working properly. Have you tried the meats you are feeding independant of the vegetables to see if it's those that are affecting her, sort of the elimination diet. Fish oil or cocounut oil is great, even put organic apple cider vinegar on her food. Add a probiotic if you can. |

give her a rinse down after being outside, it could be spores from pollens in the grass and then give her a spray with diluted half and half distilled water and apple cider vinegar |
Well, we went back to the vinagar. THe Gold Bond powder didn't work any better and almost took our breath. At least the vinagar or lemon doesn't make their hair dried out looking like that powder. Kayla has been just crying, poor baby. Today has been the first day it seems to be better. I bathed her in oatmeal shampoo last night and put the vinagar on her and it helped. Now Lexi is scratching some. What is going on???? I think the air is just full of crap. Wish it would turn real cold or snow or something to help clear the air. Good luck with that baby. I know its so hard and I just don't like giveing all those meds and shots the vet give them. Been that route. |
I actually read that often the oatmeal isn't good for skin conditions, does anyone have a hypo allergenic natural shampoo suggestion. Just make sure the vinegar is organic apple cider, apple cider vinegar isn't the same. You may want to try rubbing coconut oil over their bodies, I hear ya, enviro allergy gal here, I feel for your babies |
Could it be dandruff? My little guy just started scratching a lot, I looked and noticed his skin was a little flaky in some spots. I'm thinking of giving him an Omega 3 oil supplement. |
I have a coworker with a new yorkie (Spanky). The little fellow has been itchy since he got him. He has been to the vet multiple times & has tried several of the home remedies mentions above, without success. The last time he went to the vet, he was told to lather him up really good in Selsun Blue shampoo (active ingredient- selenium sulfide), wrap him up in a towel, leave it on for 15 min, then rinse. He did this & said that it has helped immensely! |

Oatmeal shampoos are not recommended by Vet Derms for dogs who have any skin issues whatsoever - it can actually exacerbate the issues. Try something like this instead: Amazon.com: SynergyLabs VF Clinical Care... ---or--- Amazon.com: SynergyLabs VF Clinical Care Itch... |
