Teeth Health Hi All, I am new here :) I did look at a couple of posts regarding this issue, but wanted to start a new thread anyway. I got my best little pal when he was around 3 or 4 years. His teeth had never been brushed. I was twenty years old and had very little money but saved up the $500 or so to get them laser cleaned. They were still bad (I think I had higher hopes than what reality allows for). ANYWAY, my question now is.. are there any secret tips that I'm unaware of for a dog who doesn't like all those teeth cleaning treats and bones? The little punk! (totally kidding) Occasionally he will have a Greenie -- I know there are mixed feelings about these and ideally he wouldn't have them, but are they better than nothing? Be honest! -- Sometimes he will have raw carrots which I read can help. Do bully sticks help clean teeth? He LOVES those. Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated. I am glad to be here because the amount of love I have for my dog is clearly understood by you all! |
A professional teeth cleaning didn't help that much? That seems weird... I hope the vet knew what he was doing? lol. Because usually they get them pretty darn clean. Brushing is the best IMO. I worked hard to desensitize Jackson, and he still hates it, but he just puts up with it now. I can't do it for more than 30 seconds but at least it's something. We use CET toothpaste and a baby tooth brush. Check out HealthyMouth ... it's definitely pricey, but it's one of the only approved (by the VOHC) water additives. They have a gel as well that you can rub onto the teeth and gums with a q-tip but the water additive is probably easiest. Never used Greenies, so not sure if they actually help. We feed Dentastix occasionally (which are "bad", too, meh). But to be honest, I think they make a little difference. My dads dog has nasty breath and since we've been giving her Dentastix, it's gotten much better. They do have RX kibbles for teeth problems, if her teeth are that bad. I don't know what to do about bad breath either I've wondered if the groomer can clean her teeth! |
I've started using Healthy Mouth (Brit mentions it above too) and I think it's great so far. Marcel was having some kinda bad breath, which is unusual for him - but after a couple days of Healthy Mouth, GONE. I was happy to find this result bc it meant to me that it was doing *something*. It's a little pricey, but it should last a while. What I'm doing is using it as a 'gravy' rather than as a water additive...I think it'll last longer as a gravy. Other things people have used here: Petzlife gel/spray, Leba III, ProDen Plaque Off...and few other things I'm probably not remembering. |
I have found that no matter what products you use, they don't take the place of a dental by the vet. I recently took one of mine to a specialist for a dental because he is very old and has collapsing trachea....she highly recommends Ora Vet. It has to be applied initially by the vet after the dental and then you apply it weekly. So far, his teeth look amazing and that is two months out where in the past in two months his teeth were already getting heavy tartar. She also recommends CET oral hygeine rinse. And, brushing at a minimum of 3 times/week. |
Are there different kinds of dentals?? Both of my boys are due for their dentals...well, my older male is overdue. Per vet recommendation, we have held off because Princeton has been having health problems...but I am going to talk to the vet again about getting it done I am wondering if there are certain dentals that are more safe than others?? I am also wondering whats the avg cost of a dental. Princetons last dental cost $200 and that included extractions. I called a different vet 2 days ago to get a quote on a teeth cleaning for Ricky and they quoted me $300 to $1000. Since Princeton has cardiac issues, it's a double edged sword. He needs a dental because dirty teeth can exacerbate his heart problem....yet, he's at a bigger risk for being put under because he's a senior dog with heart problems. |
Cali gets her teeth cleaned every year ,but wonder of wonders this year at her check up the vet said she was good and bring her back in 4 months to check again:D Last year I the vet gave me a bag of T/D (the ones for cats because they are smaller). She gets 3 of them every night just before bedtime (she thinks they are treats). They kind of have a center that has light abrasive fibers. |

Cali, 3 pound 13 ounces, gets 3-4 every night with no problems. I give her the small (cat) ones, because she has trouble chewing the big ones. They are. VOCH approved. We also try to use Petzlife every other day at least. |
