rescue dog hi all, I have just taken on a rescue yorkie or yorkie x cav bitch from a puppy farm - sorry I can-not be more specific - the vet says she is around 3 yrs old,no problems & weighs 4lb,she is mainly yorkie, she has just been spayed & started her vaccinations so is not going out yet - my main concern is how much to feed her as I don,t want to overfeed & start a weight problem.hope someone can advise - thankyou |
I don't know much about this, but we got a girl who was used for breeding in May. She had been kept in a cage and used only to breed. She was 4.5 pounds when taken in. She now weighs nearly 8 pounds and is very over weight. She was a little under weight at first. I do not have advice because we have found it is very difficult to limit her food. When she eats, she acts like it's her last meal. We have an underweight yorkie also. So we had been free feeding. We have stopped this because she eats everything. I would say stick to the recommended amounts on the food label. I have started home cooking for mine and this seems to have helped the skinny yorkie. She loves any kind of food so she'll be fine either way. You are wise to consider this before the weight problem starts. I wish I had considered it. |
rescue yorkie thank you so much for replying - this little one also has just been used for breeding having possibly had 6 litters, & also eats everything & anything-the labels would be a good guide & as long as I keep an eye on her weight we should be o.k.i think maybe she has become "greedy"because she would have had to fight for food so maybe once she,s settled in properly & established a routine the feeding will calm down.i wish you luck with your little ones who have obviously found themselves a lovely mommy & thankyou again |
Congratulations! As far as feeding, I know my 3 are little piggies and will eat more than they need. I would follow the label and if she seems to be gaining too much cut it back a little. I have noticed the labels say to feed more than they actually need though so keep an eye on her weight. |
My 4 lb boy gets 1/4 cup 2x a day |
If I feed by the label he would be fat. He is already stocky |
Yeah like others have said go with the feeding guide on the label of the food you purchase. If you notice that she is starting to get chunky talk to your vet about cutting it back or switching to a different brand. We give our pups the Blue Buffalo Freedom its organic and grain-free, super healthy. |
I also feed blue buffalo freedom, small breed. |
