Environmental Allergies/Dry skin~any tips?? Both of my boys are itching themselves raw. One has itched his neck, under his ears and the other has literally itched raw spots on his back and butt. I've got tshirts and diapers on them so they can't itch themselves raw and I am putting hydrocortizone cream on their itchy spots. I know they don't have fleas. I am pretty sure it's environmental allergies. The only thing is, they aren't really itching their paws like I would expect them to do. I gave them a bath last night with flea shampoo and then anti itch shampoo and it seems to have only made things worse. Does anyone have any good tips for dealing with environmental allergies?? What do you do for dry skin on your pup?? |
Are they related? If not, it's a little unusual that they're both having such similar symptoms, which makes me wonder if it's something like fleas...? I know you say it isn't though, but just wanted to say that regardless. If they *are* related, then it may be less unusual for them to possibly be experiencing the same allergies. When/how did it start? And are you in a warm or cold climate right now? If in a warm climate, do check pollen.com for pollens in your area. If in a cold climate, then ugh, it could be dust or something which is a tough allergy, obvs. First, you gotta go to the vet since they've broken skin which means it could easily be/turn into a staph infection (pyoderma). Vet needs to do a skin scraping to look for overgrowth of bacteria. If you and the vet both think allergies, then bc these symptoms are so severe and are clearly interfering w/ quality of life, you have to think about meds to try such OTC antihistamines, Temaril P, steroids, Atopica, or allergy testing. If these allergies are all year round, then you think Atopica and/or allergy testing. If just seasonal, then Temaril P, OTC (if they work, that is), or steroids. What are you feeding and did you change foods before this started? I am a little surprised they're not licking/chewing their paws...which brings me back to that flea/pest question. Here's another thread on allergies: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...tart-here.html You also should get an appropriate shampoo (NOT oatmeal!) that will support their issues, and most Vet Derms will suggest bathing about every 3-4 days if symtpoms are exacerbated. Go to Amazon and look up Synergy Labs VF shampoos, get the medicated one (anti parasitic etc) or the itch relief version. They make good stuff, but you def need to follow the directions. Oh, also - get them on fish oil such as Ark Naturals Royal Coat. |
I kept thinking it was fleas as they did have a bout with fleas a month or 2 ago. I treated them and the house and haven't seen any since...but they are still itching like crazy...just in different spots on their bodies. I also know that they really react to just one flea bite. We are in Michigan and its finally starting to get cooler here. I know my older dog has environmental allergies and he's been on steroids for it, but this is my first fall with my younger guy and it's really flared up with him over the past few days. I am going to order the shampoo and I am also going to get him into the vets. It seems like everyone I talk to around here is having problems with their dogs itching right now.... I definitely haven't had any food changes, but I am wondering if my little guy is allergic to his sweaters. He's been wearing them more since it's cold out...but he's itching his behind and the sweater doesn't even touch there.... |
