Making a strange coughing noise when he drinks?
 
Gunner makes the oddest noises when he drinks water and at other times. He kinda hacks and breaths funny thru his nose. He is not sick, he eats and plays all the time, so is this a normal thing for small yorkies? He does it when he is excited too, or if he eats something too fast. Any suggestions?

Reverse sneeze maybe? My dog does those a lot!

I am no expert, but I have heard that Yorkies can have a problem with their tracheas. Not to alarm you, but maybe something to look into. Wishing all the best!

Having just gone to the vet a few days ago, I can tell you what she told me regarding collapsed trachea. She told me that if you start to notice a honking noise (like a goose's honking) then you should maybe be worried about trachea collapse.

If it's just a sort of snorting noise mixed with some spluttering through the noise, it sounds to me like a reverse sneeze! My little June reverse sneezes all the time, usually when he's particularly excited about something. And, yes, he sometimes does it when he starts drinking water, usually if he gets up to have a drink after laying down for a while or just getting up from a nap.

It does sound like this, maybe a reverse sneeze? He also does it if I touch him on a certain spot on his neck (not on purpose), so maybe it is his little trachea? If I hear a honking noise I will be sure to get him right to the vet. How come this happens with the little dogs?

A certain spot on his neck as in somewhere along the front of his throat and not the back of his neck, right? It could be some sensitivity in the trachea. June has a little sensitive spot at the base of his throat - when I touch there lightly he started a bit of hacking and coughing - but this could lead to trachea problems later if that spot (or anywhere else on the throat) continues to be aggravated. Or so my vet tells me :(

The noise he makes when I touch his throat is different from the noise of a reverse sneeze, though. The reverse sneeze sounds like snorting through the nose whereas he does more of a coughing/hacking from his mouth when I touch his throat. Do you use a harness when you walk or a collar with a leash?

I have no idea why this is more of a problem with little dogs, maybe someone else knows?

When my guys drink or eat too fast, they make noise. My vet runs his fingers up & down their throat to check for CT, if they don't cough, it's most likely reverse sneezing. When Momo has a long one, I hold his head down by pressing down on his nose, this will make him swallow, to open his airway & he'll recover right away.

When my Bailey drinks too much, too fast, he usually burps shortly thereafter:) This is not related to the original question but thought I'd add this to see if anyone's YT does this as well. I hope that it's not a sign of something bad to come in the future.

Do you know if there is something that an owner can do to help not get the collapsed trachea problem? I wonder what causes it?

First and foremost you should avoid putting any kind of pressure on the throat. That means a harness and leash is best for walking as opposed to a collar and leash that can tug on the neck!

Right... good point. I have Bailey in a harness already, so that's a good thing. Is the trachea problem only due to using a collar?

I've tried two harnesses so far, he hated both of them. I ordered the silk harness from the member here, waiting for that. I've yet to leash train him. He is 16 weeks on Thursday, guess I should get busy training him?!:eek:
If I push on his throat area he does that hacking noise.

If you actually push/ press on it, they will hack. My vet runs his finger up & down the throat & those w/CT will start honking even if he doesn't apply pressure on it.

I don't think he is honking. When I comb his face and head in the morning and evening I sometimes hold him the wrong way and if I touch the front of his throat the wrong way he will hack. I'm trying to teach him to lay down on a rolled towel like I watched on a youtube video, make it so he doesn't move so much. Keeping his face clean without holding him has become a trial in itself!
