The fact that you are being a responsible pet owner and getting your pup neutered is what is important ! :) |
5-6 months. Gus only lifts his leg to pee on the pad. If you want to stop the leg Lifting then do it around 5 months. Also, it might depend on how big your dog is at the time. Gus Gus was about 8-9 pounds, tracking to be about 10-11. Gus did have to have some teeth pulled. With smaller breeds it is semi common to have teeth problems. That is not saying do not do anything you can to help your dog to have a wonderful set of teeth. |
I did want to add that there are good breeders out there who do it young when selling there pups to protect there lines they have worked hard for but maybe you breeder will let you wait if you talk to them about it. |

Jackson still will hump his Pillow Pet when he's excitable. Even my dads female JRT mix loves to hump lol... she was fixed young. It's not really a sexual thing. |
I am rethinking this issue myself and after talking to a holistic vet patient about this and researching online I am mortified my vet wants to spay at 5 months AND vaccinate rabies.read read read people. I am so glad there are so many wise an updated people here that know their facts ....I'm going to wait....I have a 3 lb female and I will do what I have to to give her a better future. Read and understand about the growth plates and all other cons to spaying early. As far as the cons , what are the percentages? Not enough to spay early for me. I'm looking for a new holistic vet and this time I know what to look for. |

Max was neutered at 6 months and Teddy at almost 8 months. I wish that I waited longer with Max. With a boy, I would wait closer to a year. If I had a girl, I don't know what I would choose, before first heat or closer to a year. |
Concerning leg lifting, Max was lifting at 13 weeks. Thankfully he has never marked inside the house. Marking was one of my fears and the reason I rushed to neuter at 6 months. Humping, Max did very little of that as a pup. Teddy humps occasionally as a way to show dominance. He does not mark inside either. He was a squatter until about a year old, when he started lifting his leg after watching Max. |
I am waiting until my boy is 12 months old, better chance of growth plates being closed, he will have retained teeth pulled at this time. |
Early neutering will not stop leg lifting. My Aussie was fixed at 3 months (pound puppy) and began lifting his leg at 1 year. |
Oh I agree on rabies being a must but not at the same time as a spay under anesthesia is a no no! |
All four of my girls were spayed at close to one year, after their first heat, after growth plates were closed, and two of them had retained baby teeth removed then. This was in accordance with my vet's advice, and was only slightly inconvenient having to go through one heat cycle and protect them from getting pregnant. He also added that going through one heat cycle does not increase chance of mammary cancer, but every heat after does increase. Also, studies are showing a link to spay before 1st heat to urine incontinence in females later (more so in larger dogs than Yorkies,). |
