Help with coat Ok my little guy is about 11weeks and doesn't have the best looking coat.. We wash him and everything but I'm assuming the lack of shininess in his coat is from the food we've been feeding him (bill jack) that's what the breeder recommended however I'm wondering if any of you guys know a better brand that would help with his dry looking coat? Also according to dog food advisor bill jack didn't have the best rating. |
I've read that fish oil or a food with fish in it helps their coat. I'm new, so someone correct me if I'm wrong! |
Teddy's coat got so soft and shiny on the Wellness Core Ocean formula. We currently supplement with a fish oil capsule every other day or so and that also seems to help. I also remember when we were getting Toki's weight down with the Wellness Core Reduced Fat, her coat got dull and her skin got dry (which I do believe was due to the fat content being so low). Her coat was also just kinda weird as a puppy and didn't get smooth and silkier until she got older and starting getting her adult coat in. My parents' beagle gets a couple hard-boiled egg yolks a week and my mom claims that this is why her coat is so nice! I think the most important thing is to feed a balanced, high quality food. I'd check out the Wellness Core for Puppies but my pups have also had good results with the grain-free varieties of Fromm as well (Surf & Turf and Game Bird especially)...those formulas are all-life stages so you could use them for your puppy...most of the independently owned pet stores near me sell Fromm. |
Since your puppy is only 11 weeks, his coat will change as he gets older. It is probably the puppy coat that is looking dull. Tatiana had a dull coat when she was around that age and it is now shiny and very soft. I do recommend switching food at some point. I would leave it for now as, he is quit young and the switch may upset his system along with the move to a new home. In a few weeks a gradually change to a better food would be good. I have mine on Nutrisca grain free dry kibble and they all have shiny coats and healthy skin. You have to order it online or speciality stores as chain stores do not carry it. I do not use any supplement as the food has everything they need for healthy skin and body. Best of luck in your search and congratulations on your new addition! |
Thanx so much.. I've had him since he was about 6 weeks so he's almost out of the bill jack which is why I figured now would be a good time to switch him lol anywho I see he's starting to silver at the top of his head and the roots of his hair not to sure if that has anything to do with the dullness lol but is it normal for his coat to be turning at such a young age? |
If you are going to buy a new food do it before you run out of Biiljac so you can introduce the new one slowly to prevent tummy upset. I too think the fish based grainfree formulas are great for a nice shiny coat. My 3 are on Earthborn Holistics, Coastal Catch. |
It is normal for them to begin changing their color! If you do a food switch, do it gradually and keep him on bill Jack until he is completely switch over. Mine had some issues with switching foods....soft poos! It took Tatiana 3 full weeks to transition to a new food. I almost gave up and was ready to keep her on the old food. Now that she has been on Nutrisca for 4 months, I have seen such a change in her skin & coat, her poos are firm and she has very little itching! |
