Bath Time Question I either posted this question or read it somewhere here that it's good to put cotton balls in their ears when giving them a bath to keep the water out. Ok, now here's the dumb question. How do you keep the cotton balls in their ears? Coco shakes hers out. I try to keep her from shaking when she's wet and she does really good for the most part but she can pull a fast one on me now and then. I've tried using the whole cotton ball and it seemed too big for her ear so I tried cutting them in half to push it in better and that little stinker can still shake it out. Maybe I was just afraid to push the full size cotton ball into her ear too far?? :confused: What am I doing wrong? |
I tried the cotton balls and earplugs and couldn't get them to stay in. You definitely don't want to push them into the ear canal. I used to stress about getting water in the ears, but then I thought, Yorkies swim. When I dry my boys, I make sure to dry their ears well, with the dryer on low heat. Occasionally I use an ear cleaner with a drying agent. |
I tried the cotton balls and it did not work my vet just suggests you use an ear cleaner with a drying agent in it like epi-otic after baths. |
Oh I can't imagine keeping cotton balls in lilah's ears! I use a canine liquid health ear product after most baths too. So far she has been good with just that.:thumbup::aimeeyork |

It's probably easier with Harry, as he has floppy ears. I kind of hold each ear from underneath, then point the shower-head downwards so it doesn't get into the ear canal. Thank you all!!! The last few times I have bathed her I gave up on the cotton balls. They became more trouble than they were worth. I will check into the drying agent. You guys are awesome!!! Thank you for the help:) |
You can try using foam ear plugs. They can be found in the hardware section at Home Depot or Lowes. They are used for minimizing noise. You roll them in between your fingers and they flatten. Then place them in ears as far in as possible. Then they puff out in place perfectly. Hope this helps.!! |
I have never used any ear protection or drying agent in Huey's ears. Like Sally, I just hold Huey's head downward when I pour water over his head. This is as much to keep it out of his nose as his ears, because he wants to look up and then splutters and coughs (dingbat!). When I am concentrating around the ears, I fold them over if they are not already flopped from the weight of the water. Afterwards, I dry them well with a towel and try to direct the blowdryer into them (doggie dryer, on low, of course) but he hates that. He has never had any problems with his ears though. |
I've had 3 Yorkies & never ever had a cottonball of any size stay in for long during a bath. And none of my Yorkies has ever had ear problems. I use the ear cleaner and clean the ears just prior to the bath and then bathe and they have all done fine. |
