Feeding question The past two days, Cherry has not been eating well during the day. She eats in the morning and evening, but will barely touch her food during the day. She's 7 weeks and 1lb, 15oz. Is she too young to start twice a day feedings? I would keep food available all day for her, but stop actively trying to get her to eat during the day if that's OK. I know she's still really young, but I wasn't sure if this was OK since she's almost 2 lbs already. Advice? Should I keep pushing food on her during the day? |
Hmmm, interesting. It's a little bit odd that she's not eating more frequently given her young age. Imho, it's a little early to go to 2x day....but if she *is* getting enough quantity during those 2x day feedings, then it may be okay. She may be self regulating, so ya never know...just that it's quite young to do so. Do you think the quantity is enough? |

I think the amount you are feeding is adequate. I have a picky eater and he usually only eats 1/4 of a cup per day, he is gaining weight and is healthy as can be. I leave kibble out for him all day to free feed when he was younger. Now that he is 10 months old, I feed him twice a day sometimes three times, depending if he's hungry. He lets me know when he's hungry. He will sit at his empty bowl and look at me until I fill it up for him. He is now currently 4 pounds. Yorkies are special, I have never had a picky eater before, my three other dogs will eat any and everything. I have to regulate their feeding so they don't overeat. That's not the case with Dooney, sometimes it's a struggle to get him to eat enough. Sure do love my baby though. |
OK, I think it was actually the Orijen she didn't like. I bought some RC YT Puppy kibble and she's been gobbling that down, not even softened! She's also grazing on it during the day, too. This morning, she's eaten about 1/3 of her daily portion of the kibble and 1/8 can of RC puppy soft food (separate, not mixed together, as I want her eating dry, unsoftened kibble) So, now I have a bag of very expensive Orijen puppy food! What do I do with it? Will a rescue take it as a donation if it's open? |

My Tinkerbell was a picky eater from day 1. I have found that free feeding works best for her. I fill her bowl up in the morning and she picks at it when she is hungry. I also have never had a dog that could self regulate like this. Tink never overeats and is the perfect weight for her frame at 5 lbs. |
You could take it back to the store and they may refund your money if she won't eat it. My pet stores guarantee their food or get your money back. If that doesn't work then an animal shelter will take it. |
I had the hardest time getting Illy to eat when she was a puppy... I had to make it a game and sit with her and literally hand feed her, at times. She is eating Orijen Six-Fish right now, at 2-years old... Can't go wrong with Orijen!! :thumbup: Best of the Best in my opinion... ;) |
My boys free feed during the day and get a bit of wet food with their fish oil in the morning. I watch their weight by feeling their body composition. So far no overheating. |
