What do you use instead of Frontline plus r/o? Second time Scarlett has had a reaction to Frontline Plus and this time, I only put a single drop-if that on her. It wasn't as bad as the thirty minutes of running around like a crazy dog and rolling like the last time (put on too soon after grooming and used a full dose for 6 pound dog). I really think I shouldn't use it (is that a duh?). From what I've read about Advantix, it may cause a similar reaction though I guess I should try it. Two doses is $32! That's an expensive trial! I guess my question is, is there anything else out there that is safe AND works? My neighbor likes Sonesto or whatever that collar is. I bought an herbal spray to use until I figure something out. Do I even need to use anything in the winter? Help! I can't bear to have my furbaby think I'm hurting her when I put that stuff on! :mad: |
Here I use advantix on both of my dogs and only in the summer period. Never had a problem with ticks during the cold periods (I don't use it during these periods). |
I use revolution, it has a dose for 5lbs and under and had heartworm meds. The only downside is it isn't as good for ticks. |
Advantix II is the only thing that works here. Please don't use any kind of collar those are just not safe. |
I use revolution also but have heard good reviews on capstar. I believe it is a spinosad base which as A garden related bug deterant is omri certified organic. Again, I haven't used it myself but the reviews from folks I have spoken to are very positive. |
I put 15 drops of tea tree oil into a bottle of their regular shampoo to keep fleas away.The bottle is 250ml.Works wonderfully. Itīs antiseptic and antibacterial also, so it keeps their skin healthy too. |

Tea tree toxicity is Kind of like garlic I guess. Much more serious adversity for cats and marketed across the board in pet products. Though it can be very dangerous to some animals it can be just the thing another needs. I think dosage amount has a lot to do with it and of course being aware of your dogs personal tolerance and what 'the norm' is for them so you can be aware of a reaction if one should occur. |

Can you skip the "plus" and just use a regular flea treatment? Do you have a severe tick problem? I don't use tick treatment for Gracie even though we do have ticks in the area. When I walk her I keep her out of the tick infested areas and I run a flea comb through her to check for fleas and ticks after we come home from a walk. There is no reason to put your dog through the extra stress of the additional pesticide for ticks unless your dog runs in a highly infested area frequently. The tick pesticides do not prevent ticks from getting on your dog and burrowing in. It kills them eventually I guess but not quick enough. We used Frontlline Plus from our cats a couple of summers ago because we were having a particularly bad summer with ticks. They would go out in the fields and woods and come home with ticks on them. It seemed like the ticks loved that Frontline Plus. The cats would still have fully engorged ticks on them despite the fact that we used the stuff all summer. I don't bother with it anymore. I just meet them at the door with my flea comb and tick puller. We haven't had hardly any problem this year. I hope it stays that way. |
