Looking for experiences/information on Microvascular Displaysia Hi everyone, I haven't been around YT in quite some time, but if the community is like I remember, I know there will be some help/experiences to share. :) I have been in contact with a lady who had a 1 year old, 3.5 lb little yorkie boy who has been surrendered by his 84 year old owner who can no longer care for him. We are looking to potentially adopt him (baby brother for Lucas!). The woman has told me that he has Microvascular Displaysia, which I know is common in little dogs. He is asymptomatic, but I'd like to have as much info about it as I can ahead of time before we meet and adopt him. I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the results doing a simple google search, so anyone with MVD pups/experiences/info would be wonderful. Thank you so much! |
My dog has it, she is 13. She is managed w/ a diet. I check her blood and urine twice a year if all is going well. |
Toki has asymptomatic MVD. We were instructed to just feed her a regular dog food (you would not do this if your dog was symptomatic...it'd require a special diet and sometimes medications) and do blood and urine tests every six months to keep an eye on things. You can also supplement with milk thistle so you might talk to your vet about that. I used to give Toki Denamarin which is a good liver support supplement. Toki is a little over 2 years old and you can't tell that anything is wrong. For us, since the MVD is asymptomatic, it is just something to know about and keep an eye on but doesn't affect our daily routine. |
Tibbe has it and is managed on his diet. His liver is compromised but almost any Yorkie is going to have some type problem or the other and MVD can be managed nicely on diet. Tibbe has a recent tummy upset with some spitting up bile and a mucous-y stool and then diarrhea after eating two spilled nugget of corn and soy milk but a vet trip, medication and he was right as rain again, though I almost expired with worry his liver was bad again. It wasn't - just ate the wrong thing as he's on a 1/2 hepatic/1/2 I/D diet and the corn/soy just upset his GI system for a bit. He's fine now and fully feisty and playful on the MVD diet. If you do take the dog, commit yourself to feeding the special diet and learning all about MVD, not EVER giving them treats and human food and things they shouldn't have and know there may be tummy troubles from time-to-time. From what I understand, these dogs can live long, productive lives as long as their owner is committed to proper diet and regular blood tests twice yearly and good vetting. |
Thank you everyone :) We met him last night! |
Exciting! Can't wait to hear all about him. |
