Vaccine guidelines changing again? - Part 2!

Here is the update...

We are now a 5 year DHP hospital!!!

The decision was based on the 2011 AAHA Guidelines which state that DHP should be given no more than every 3 years and that it is effective for greater than 5 years (link below, the schedule is sideways). Three years was a compromise, in part to keep some vets quiet who still wanted to do it annually. The jump from annually to every 5-7 years would have been too much for them.

Additionally, the decision was based on the following two papers that clearly show that we are still vacciating more than necessary. Of course this is not beneficial to the pups because adverse reactions do occur including long-term dsease. The thought that overvaccinating is benign is not true.

I was looking at the link and it is the same as before .. correct? Or, are they changing the recommendations?

It is not new. But...most AAHA hospitals blanketly recommend doing DHP every 3 years now. Our hospital has moved to every 5 years and their rationale is based on the above links. The only new part is that maybe more hospitals will now move to every 5 years. When I found out that this change might take place in June some members wondered where the 5 year idea came from.:)

Maybe you mentioned this in the other thread and I have forgotten: what prompted your hospital's change now if the information is a couple years old?

Good question for which I have no answer.

In AAHA 2011 it mentions every 5 years as acceptable. I don't remember if earlier editions stated the same. If I had to guess, they probably just switched from annual to every 3 years when a lot of other AAHA hospitals did the same. But AAHA did not set every 3 years in stone. It was a compromise, So is every 5 years. Then perhaps recently one of the owners of the hospital dug a bit deeper.

Since 5 years is still a random compromise (very safe). Most offices will stick to every 3 (or annually which is ridiculous). Some might get really brave and do it every 7-9 based on the studies. Hopefully vets will start to be open to doing it less often.

Owner and I were talking today and the bottom line for him is that the decision to vaccinate should not be a monetary one. And if we are jabbing every three years when there is a ton of evidence that this is still too often, then (in this office's case based on what they see scientifically) we are doing it for monetary gain (I feel like some members won't like this..so I repeat "in this office's case"). The vets here never ever make decisions based on what makes them the most money.

It is still not within some vets' comfort levels to do it less often, but at sone point they need to move ahead with the times (esp.annual vaccinators). Because minimum DOI is 7 years it is safe to assume every 5 is still being very cautious. Maybe they will move to every 7 years in the future.

Gotcha! Thanks...I am going to ask my vet about this. I have a feeling they might be slower to change as they were slow to change to 3 years.

It would be nice if AAHA would simply say 5 years! It should be more about the pups than satisfying vets who don't want to change.

Owner today said he thinks it was written this way just to appease vets and not upset things too much.:rolleyes: AAHA hospitals will hopefully accept it if their clients want every 5 years b/c the guidelnes clearly say it is okay.

On another note - these papers aren't giving noncores much love.

I think something might be afoot because when I took Teddy in recently for his illness, our vet did not ask why I haven't brought Max back for his DHHP. :D (Max had his rabies vacc in April). When I bring one dog in, he always goes over the chart of the other and asks about the other one.

Well if I were teddy and max, I would complain, because that's totally against HIPPA lol.

I was already going with 5 years based upon the previous studies, but am glad they're now adopting it more.

Also happy to read the non-cores aren't receiving much love, YAY!!!
