Glucosamine and Condroitin
 
Does anyone use a supplement for humans for their dogs? Just wondering because I recently started taking a supplement for myself and the ingredients are almost identical to Jada's Cosuquin DS??

:) Yes....not with Harry (yet!) but with Rosie our Labrador.

She was diagnosed with arthritis when she was about 12 years old, and OUR VET (!!!!) actually suggested we give her a glucosamine + chondroitin supplement daily, which we did, and she lived another 3 years in a far 'easier' condition than she was in previously :)

She was a big girl though (just like her mama!!! :D) so I don't know how you could work out the proportions - worth a try though Michelle? :) Sally x

I have been wondering that too.

BTW I have taken Glucosamine and Condroitin for a long time, but recently started Schiff MegaRed Joint Care, which is krill oil and hyalauronic acid, which is even more effective for joint pain (hips and knees). Krill oil is excellent for Omega 3 too.

It is a soft gel cap, and I'm tempted to put it on my Kayla's food. One vet said she had very minor LP when she was a year old, although she no longer limps and I wonder if it already tightened up.

I'm bumping this because I want to start my dogs on this & I, too, am wondering about using a human supplement. I'd think the price would be much less, & I'm wondering how the dosage is worked out. My dogs are 3.5 lbs. Thank you if you can help.

I give this to all three of the pups, but not the human supplement. Piccolo's vet dermatologist recommended glucosamine and chondroitin and she said it didn't really matter what form in which it is received (not sure she was talking about human supplement though), so I give all three Jake's Hip Treats. They love it.

For me, I tried taking glucosamine and chondroitin... Not sure how to say this delicately, so will just say it. It was causing huge problems with gas. :eek:

The ingredients are the same in the people and the animal ones. My old vet used to recommend people with bigger dogs buy the bottle of glucosamine and chondroitin from Costco so it wouldn't be as expensive. Just ask your vet what the dosage would be. My families chocolate lab is on 2 Costco tabs a day.

I tried Peek A Boo on it (doggy variety) but he kept vomiting... I think it is too rich for him. I'd start slow and build up to the recommended dose....

When Libby had her sore leg, I gave her Flexicose. It comes in bottles for humans and another bottle for pets. It is the same for both, with the only difference being dosage. Flexicose is a liquid glucosamine complex and absorbs quickly into the body. I saw it do wonders for my sisters yorkie and have been sold on the liquid ever since.

Thank you! This sounds like a good way to give it to a little dog. I checked the price, about $25 for one bottle that'll last about a year for one dog. I was hoping this thread would get more response but maybe I'll have to do a search & see if I can learn a bit more.
