Advice needed for new tiny puppy please Hi there, I am a new yorkie mommy :) She is my 1st yorkie I have ever had. I had a chihuahua she passed away of age a few months ago I thought she was tiny...however our yorkie puppy is 16 weeks old and 1lb 4oz. I just got home from the Vet she is healthy and happy and has the best temperament however she is so tiny. Is this a normal size for a yorkie puppy at 4 mo of age? Any advice would be great, Thanks! |
Aww, congrats on your new addition! Post pix of her if you can :) All I really know about size & age is that for yorkies, it can vary considerably. I'd take a look at her parents if you can, to get an idea of her adult look & size. If you're trying to see approximately how big she'll grow to as an adult, google the yorkie growth chart. My puppy, Billi is another "little". She's 2.6 lbs at 6 1/2 months... Tinier than we ever imagined. She's the love of our lives, but she comes with hew own set of rules, like no jumping off furniture (we made her ramps for the couch/bed) and she doesn't ever go outside unattended, we have to watch her like a hawk when she plays with other dogs because she could easily get hurt, etc... But these little ones are well worth the extra effort, I think. Welcome to YT! |
1 Attachment(s) Yes I am a nervous wreck with her! No jumping no leaving her on anything she can jump or fall off of. Other dogs are a no no even tho she wants to play with them all. I made her a album on here.... Now need to figure out how to add a profile picture. I did not know how tiny these guys are. She has a tiny nose and feet and the tiniest bones it scares me. |

She is cute. you are doing all the right things my advice is stay with the forum and use it as a resource you will learn so much |
Oh what a cutie pie!! She's got such a sweet little face! If the other dogs are gentle with her, let them play a little bit supervised. The big dogs will need to learn how to interact with her, and she'll surprize you with how tough she can be. Billi is half the size as our other dog, Martini and she charges and pounces on her all the time. Of course Teeny knows to be gentle, but you get what I'm saying... She'll be fine, you might need some anxiety medication in the mean time tho! ;) |

She is very sweet! I have 2 babies (11mnths) and my female just weighed in at the vet at 2.8lb, she is tiny. We have stairs for the couch and the bed for her. Her brother is 1/2 bigger but she rules! lol! Once you baby has all her shots I would suggest you find another dog her size to socialize her. My last yorkie was not used to other dogs and that can be a problem. I have a GF with chihuahuas and we go for play dates so when they encounter other dogs their size the are not afraid. Lots of fun for them also! |
I think as the new mommy of one of these tiny, tiny babies, you are right on target! As much as we want to think these little dogs are tough, they may have a tough attitude, but they are NOT unbreakable! Their tiny little bones and joints are very fragile, and there are just things you must accept that these tiny, riny babies just can not be allowed to do! I do not sell my tiny babies....unless it is to someone that has years of experience with Yorkies and in depth knowledge of how to handle a tiny Yorkie. As far as allowing larger dogs to play with this baby, I would NEVER go there! All it takes is ONE playful huge paw coming down across that baby's neck, head, back, etc, and you have a major problem! I made the mistake of allowing a 3.5# puppy play with another young Yorkie that weighed 6#....not anywhere a huge difference in weight or size, but the larger puppy, WITH ME SITTING RIGHT THERE, "pounced" on the baby, landing across her lower back.....she broke that babys pelvis in 2 places.....so I went back to my original belief that I will not mix different sizes of pups, especially where tiny babies are concerned. As much as I want to allow them to play with other dogs, it can be a killer. My tinys are NOT allowed on furniture....there are no ramps, stairs, boxes, etc, that enable them to get UP IN/ON HIGH PLACES....one fall, one walk off the edge, and it is all over but the hole digging. No one holds these babies....people do not understand how fragile they really are. I have to think of my tiny babies like blown glass...not many people want to agree with that, not alot of people would agree with that, it is alot of extra work, worry and concern....but it is what we have to accept as normal behavior when you own one of these tinies. Around here, my 4 tiny puppies all play together because they are all between 2- 2.5 lbs and they are all the same size. It is just me and them...they are well adjusted and while they are NOT allowed to do the things the others are allowed to do, that is a world they have never known, so they do not miss that. It is my utmost responsibility to keep these little ones absolutely safe, protecting them from even themselves, and I take that seriously and make no compromises with that! Good luck with your little one....they are a lot of extra work and worry..... |
Your baby is adorable! You are in the right place for good advice. Welcome! |
Thank you all so much! Friends came over today to see her and one lady held her out and Bama started to squirm I about had a heart attack! Her husband yelled at her to not hold her like that...makes me not want to let people hold her at. Ok so wine and Xanax I need to stock up on is what your telling me? Lol She does not eat very much at all, and to get her to eat I have to put a few kibble outside of the bowl on the floor strange but it works... How do you keep your tinies coats? Puppy cut or long? Her hair by her eyes are in her eyes all the time and her eyes water. I have a Great Dane 11 mo old he loves her but they are not allowed to play just sniff and kiss and look at eachother though the kennel bars. Same with our shep/lab mix. She has started barking at me today! To pick her up lol it cracks me up! Such a tiny bark. |

She definitely is tiny, and may only top out around 2 or 3 lbs. full grown. The Yorkie standard is typically 4 to 7 lbs., although there are some smaller and some larger. You are on the right track in keeping her safe. Don't let anybody hold her unless they are sitting on the floor. Pups are so wiggly she can be dropped and seriously injured in a second. You probably know that they are susceptible to hypoglycemia if they don't eat regularly or if they play too hard. Know the symptoms, and have NutraCal to treat her with if necessary. In case you haven't seen this here is a link to a lot of new puppy info from the YT library. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/pup...w-parents.html Good luck to you, and to the others with new little ones too. |
Thank you, I took her back to the vet yesterday because when she gets excited she makes a cough sneeze noise. I thought she was getting sick however the Dr. Seems to think its her trachea calapsing. He said she is so tiny and as she grows it may improve. scary! She eats all day long... But I have to put the food outside of her bowl for her to eat it. She likes for me to sprinkle the food out then she plays with it while she is munching down. She is so silly. She has also found her bark! Sh is very bossy she barks at me to get back in bed, pick her up, take her potty, or let her out if her kennel. I do believe she thinks I am her pet! Lol. |
1 Attachment(s) Some new pictures of her... This one is her sleeping I put the remote by her so you can see how tiny she is. |
Her cute face and I put a bow in her hair hehe |

But remember if you pick her up when she barks she will start to do it all the time when SHE want up lol. With her coat. It is just preference if you want puppy cut or long coat. With a long coat you have to brush at least once a day. If not they get matted. A lot of people pick the puppy cut because it is easily manageable. She is adorable. |
Oh my goodness She looks just like my little Zoey! She is now 5 months and weighs 2.04 lbs. Won't get very big. You asked about the eyes in an earlier post. I got some eye cleansing pads at pet store that really help. Did you say you have other dogs. Do they seem to upset her? My little one has her own area but wants to be near me. I condition her every day by going to different parts of the house out of her sight , or leaving for short periods of time. She needed a place to relieve herself in the night so she stayed in her pen. Now she is older she prefers to sleep in her cage beside my bed. In the night she will whimper when she has to pee and I get up to let her pee then take her back to bed. Now that she is older it"s with ME! They love to snuggle in! Get a waterproof baby crib sheet at first or a small kennel sherpa pad to lay down beside you. You will really get to know her much better and she will love it! |
Oh my goodness, she is so tiny and adorable! I have to hand it to you owners that have these tinies, you are so brave. Gunner is 2.6 at 12 weeks and he makes me nervous. We had company yesterday for the first time since we got him, one of the guys picked him up and I darned near had a heart attack. From now on I tell everyone to pet him but don't pick him up. She is such a beauty, keep her safe! |
Welcome to YT. My Rosie is 9 months old and weighs 2.8 lbs. While that isn't like...super scarily tiny...I still consider it pretty dang small considering my other yotkie is almost 8 lbs. I never intended to get such a small dog. My girls are from the same parents, different litters and Rosie was not the smallest if the group. I am still kinda convinced she will get as big as Luma one day but seeing as she is 9 months old and not even 3 lbs...so I have to constantly remind myself that I have to handle them differently. I can't play as rough with Rosie as with Luma. She requires constant feeding to ward off hypoglycemia. I mostly carry her instead of letting her get under our feet. She is my special needy baby, but I love her all the same. The little ones really are like a permanent puppy, but that comes at a price. I would honestly much rather have a big yorkie than a tiny. |
1 Attachment(s) It is interesting reading about the difference in the care of the tinies. I saw an episode of "It's me or the dog" with Victoria Stillwell where the owner of a tiny chi never put her down because she was scared she would break if she jumped from anything and Victoria was teaching her how to let her "be a dog" but safely (still no jumping). I see now why the owner never put her down. It is obviously a great responsibility to own one so small. My last dog was over 100lbs at one point. Huey weighs 8-8.5 lbs and I'm pretty convinced that I would not be as happy with one so tiny (or maybe just as happy but in a different way) as we love to play with Huey, throwing the toys, chasing him around, laughing at the zoomies...My cousin has a 4 pounder but she is across the country so Huey and Buffy have only met once, but she was tiny next to him! She pretty much stayed tucked in her crate while Huey ran amuck. I love the pic of Bama next to the remote! It only accentuates the difference in size...here is Huey's remote pic-but it is on his 3rd birthday...he weighed approx 7.5 lbs here - over 3 times the weight of Bama! And I thought he was tiny! :D |

Something I said???? |
I don't let anyone hold my yorkie...my Bella squirmed one time and fell out of the arms of my friend who was holding her and fractured her tiny arm...my Bella was tiny too when I first got her ...she's one year and weighs 5 lbs...congrats on your baby..trust me your yorkie will steal your heart...my baby sleeps with me every night and goes with me everywhere..sometimes I sneak her to work too just so she won't be alone at home...lol |
