Patch of small scabs While fixing Lulu's hair this morning, I noticed a fairly large patch of scabs under her right ear down her jawline. I did notice she has been scratching that area a little but nothing overly excessive. She's on flea/tick treatment & I see no evidence of either. I have a vet appt this afternoon to get it checked out, but wanted to see if anyone has experienced the same thing. I am terrified it may be mange! She is on metacam & crate rest for a shoulder injury (has been since Wednesday of last week). My poor baby has had a rough two weeks!:( ETA: I've also noticed that she has been licking her paws lately as well. The vet checked her paws last week when I took her in b.c she was limping. But at that time, Lulu didn't have any of these scabs or itching on her jaw. |
Poor Lulu. I hope the vet will have some answers for you, and something to give your little girl relief. |
Update: The vet said it's a hot spot from an allergic reaction. No idea what she had a reaction to either. She is on oral antibiotics and a topical spray. I will take her back for a recheck in a week. The good news is that her shoulder doesn't seem to be bothering her anymore so the meds & crate rest are working for that. Now we just have to battle the hot spot. |

Thanks, Maximo. As we were applying the spray tonight, it appeared to be getting better already. It was much less red and irritated looking. And Lulu isn't scratching at it anymore. I just wish we could know what caused it to begin with so we could avoid that. |
Happy to hear the spray gave her some relief. Sounds like something the vet gave us when Teddy had a spider bite. Hot spots are a bit of a mystery, from what I have read. My neighbor's Chow suffered a couple each summer and she and her vet could never determine a cause. Maybe someone else will have more info or experience to share. |

Paw licking/chewing is a cardinal sign of allergies, so I'm not surprised you saw this symptom during this time. How are the pollens in your area currently (go to pollen.com and enter your zip)? You live in the south where it's still quite warm, so I wonder if she has developed some seasonal allergies...hopefully it's something seasonal and not something like dust, which is obvs much harder to manage. Did you feed her anything new, any new treats? |
Pollens are bad here so that could be it. She didn't have any new foods or treats. She's much better today & the hotspot seems to be healing very well. Thanks! |
