Does a puppy have to eat puppy food? I have a 2 year old female Yorkie who free feeds on Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier adult food and is doing well on it. Last week we brought home a 12 week old male Yorkie puppy. We put put separate food bowls but they eat out of each other's. They are both doing well and getting along. It just dawned on me that maybe the puppy should be on puppy food. He isn't due at the vet for 3 weeks so we have no vet to ask. I have 2 questions for the board. 1) Should I have the puppy eating puppy food when I am feeding good adult food? 2) How can I free feed if the two dogs eat different food? Thanks for your help on this. |
There's an "optimum" amount of nutrition that organisms thrive on, but they will do okay without this optimum level. Dog foods are made specially to meet the optimum level, not basic minimum requirements. Puppy foods generally have higher fat and higher protein than adult foods because they don't have any excess fat on them and they are growing and need lots of calories. Will your pup do okay on adult food, probably, but I wouldn't do it, I'd wait till at least 6 months before I feed adult food. If you give them both puppy food, you're adult might put on a little weight. I'd probably give both the puppy food because the puppy is the one that has great nutrition needs at this time. By the way, it's generally advisable to get a vet check within days of bringing home a new puppy, hopefully they are both doing well. |
Hi Neighbor!:) Puppy food is necessary unless you use an all life stages food. I woud either meal feed or separate them during the day with their individual foods. |
