rabies vaccine experiment Just got this from Change .org. Please read and sign the petition. The Taiwanese Council of Agriculture(COA) is planning to test whether a new strain of rabies will spread from ferret-badgers to dogs. It aims to inject rabies into at least 14 unvaccinated puppies. |
As sad as this is it is a necessary part of medical research. |
I have to respectively disagree. We already know that rabies can be spread to dogs, most mammal in fact. |
There are different strains of rabies, some of which are more likely to be spread to other species than others. For instance, the raccoons rarely become infected with the skunk strain. While I don't know the particulars of this experiment, I would assume it's because they are finding this new strain often enough that they are concerned about it ability to spread cross species. |
Here's a bit of background on the issue: COA rabies tests on dogs, other animals to go ahead - The China Post Taiwan reports first case of canine rabies infection in years | Society | FOCUS TAIWAN - CNA ENGLISH NEWS From the second article, it looks like they already know that the virus can be passed from ferret-badgers to dogs. What they should be doing is testing the effectiveness of vaccinating dogs against the rabies strain found in ferret-badgers. |
